Zanzibar, Stone Town - the birthplace of Freddie Mercury, Old Fort Before we went to visit the Freddie Mercury Museum, we decided to take a look at the Old Fort, which is also one of the attractions of the capital of Zanzibar - Stone Town. Old Fort in English, Old Fort, and in Arabic (Ngome Kongwe), was built in the years 1698-1701 on the site of a Portuguese church from the 16th / 17th century. In the 19th century there was a prison here, the fort served as a warehouse and even as tennis courts for women. Currently, it serves as a cultural center and theater. Film and music festivals take place here. Among other things, the Sauti za Busara festival of African music and the Zanzibar International Film Festival take place here.
