Korčula in Croatia, the birthplace of Marco Polo - my travels in the Balkans The island of Korčula is one of the most beautiful and popular islands in Croatia in the Dalmatian region. It is situated next to the Pelješac Peninsula, from which you can get there by ferry. You can also reach the island by land, which is a little longer but much cheaper. Korčula is adjacent to two equally beautiful islands, Hvar and Mljet. If someone has traveled around Croatia, he knows perfectly well that it is difficult to find an ugly island there. Korčula, built of white stone, is a medieval town surrounded by massive 14th century walls and towers. The city was situated in such a way that it could not be reached by cold winds called "Bora", but only warm winds called "Jugo".
