wonders of words
Words are magic things. They are symbols that we employ to tell others what we know, what we want, what we think.without words we could neither think speak, nor write. Therefore we should treat words with great care and responsibility. Someone has well said,"Say what you mean and mean what you say." We can safely say that words, like people, are known by the company they keep.Single words generally convey little or may have indefinite meaning. The meaning becomes more significant or richer when words are used in phrases. For example, take a series of descriptive words: the long awaited letter, the never-to-be-forgotten quarel. These phrases have more specific and significant meaning than the mere words comprising them.Words therefore, must be put together, must work in a groups. A word is good only if it fulfills its intended purpose in a phrase or in a sentence. When we say,"Is that the correct word?"we really mean to say,"Is that the best word I can use in this particular sentence to convey exactly what I mean?" In description,we need words that appeal particularly to the senses. We call these words colorful words. These words appeal not only to the intelligence but also to the imagination.Clearness demands that we use words with accuracy;imaginative writing demands that we use words for their vividness is essential to give an artistic quality to a composition. In colorful writing our emotions come to our aid and we understand not only with our minds but also with our hearts.
