What if your Child is a Bully
Each one of us already know what bullying is. ***Bullying*** *is when people repeatedly and intentionally use words or actions against someone.*
Mostly, bullying occurs in **school**, where children learn how to interact with the other kids and free to choose new circle of friends. I know that no parents want their child/ren to be bullied by any chance. **But what if one day, your child's school teacher calls you and tell you that your child is a bully?** No parent wants to hear that her child is a bully. It’s painful to think of your child causing harm on other kids. Some parents will take the stance of denial or feel that others are against their child. Take a deep breath, you don't need to dwell with your child's teacher, consider bullying as a serious matter. Think about the possibilities, it can really happen. It takes a brave and an open parent to realize that their child has a problem and will accept the truth that they need help. What to do if your child is bullying others? Take immediate action and address the bullying Talk with your child right away once you know that your child has bullied other kids. Explain to your child what bullying is, and that this act is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Just listen to his side and avoid putting the blame on him. *When talking to your child avoid any shameful language and try to keep calm.* Find out the Root Cause You need to determine the very reason why your child chose to bully other kids. There are possible reasons why your child became a bully. He can be a one if he became a **bully-victim**, or he attempted to be popular at school or be a part of a small group of kids whom he shared interests with. **Talk about Bullying as a Choice** Always remind your child that they are responsible for their actions. No matter what is the reason behind their bullying, they need to recognize that bullying was a choice they made. Teach your Child about Empathy Try to instill in your child to empathize the kids he has bullied. Let him acknowledge their pain. Perhaps the best thing you can do is to teach him to acknowledge how the other kids feel when they are bullied by him. *You can also teach him the Golden rule.* ***“do unto others as you would have them do unto you”*** (Matt. 7:12). **Lose his privileges** Taking away gadgets, electronics or the privilege of using the social media usually effective techniques. This is to demonstrate that bullying has consequences and not tolerated. Just be sure that once you take something away, you do not give in later. Stick to your decision. **Do not Shame your Child** Many parents are shaming their kids when they found out their bad doings. But always remember, shaming is a form of bullying too and should not be used in disciplining you child. ***Shaming*** *is not useful discipline strategies instead, kids will learn that it is acceptable to humiliate others.* The discipline starts at home. Always give time to your child, for some kids are begging your attention too. If you're a busy parent, make sure to give and make time for your children. No parents wish to raised a bully and no parents want their child to be bullied. Always talk to your child and encourage him to talk openly. Bullying can happen face to face. It can also happen online - this is called **cyberbullying**. ***If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?*** Stop the bullying immediately. Yes it could avoid and change the personality of your child ,for being a responsible parent to guide them for a better person and not hurting someone.
You're right there, every. parents must be responsible. That's why bullying should be address properly to their child, for the child to be able to know that bullying is a bad behavior and not tolerable. It hurst when a parent found out that his son is being bullied, what more if he found out that his son is the perpetrator.
The behavior of the child is the product of the way parents interact with their children. Studies show that most of the bullies are also victims of abusive parents. The victims cannot express their anger towards their parents because of fear. And because of that, the victim find weaker host to release their outrage. As you said, they should address the root cause of the problem to solve it.
Very well said kl4d! Yes, the root cause must be determined first to avoid putting all the blame to the child. It is important to know why the child do such acts. Some parents may not accept the fact and deny that they have shortcomings as parents too. Instead of disciplining their child, some will immediately punish their child which is not good to the physical, psychological and mental health of the child.
I doubt a teacher will ever tell me my child is a bully but if I would ask further (teacher) and talk to my child. I know my children and if they start bullying there must be a very good reason for it.
That's good to know you that you know your child very well, actually all parents must know their children. If you know you raised your child very good and well with respect, you don't need to worry. And that's right kids won't bully anyone if someone or something has triggered them why they will do such act. I can't put my self on someone's shoes now, my children are still young and I have enough time to teach them and discipline them very well. I have a long way to go but I'm always open for possibilities that's why I must keep this in mind.
We talk a lot, discuss each subject no matter how busy I am or ill. It also means I believe them on their word. I wish all parents knew their child but mine did not either.
My son with Special Needs (ADhD to be exact) sometimes being left behind by other kids in our neighborhood. It is because my son is so fluent in speaking English, and they can't communicate well with my Son. (We are Filipino) I usually here them "Let's go, _________ is coming to play with us." and then they run away from my son. It's not directly bullying but it hurts me a lot to witness that scenario.
