Today, I would like to share about this place called 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐚𝐧, in Borneo. Labuan is a Federal Territory of Malaysia and is a tax haven for international businesses. Therefore, taking a holiday in this financial hub is the last thing on any traveller's mind. In fact, as a tourist, one is hard pressed to search for anything to do here. Of my two visits to Labuan pre-COVID-19, the only activity that stuck in my memory was sailing into the sunset on the perahu larai (sailboat in English), bobbing up and down South China Sea according to the rhythm of the waves. For someone who can't swim and suffers from water phobia, I went on the sailboat THREE times in two visits. Was it fun or was it FUN? Super tanned but do I care? 😂 Labuan is smallish, even smaller than Ipoh. Similar to Ipoh, my home city, Labuan is still peppered with low-rise buildings, just fewer of them. But the gem of Labuan, and I am not speaking for myself only, is the sunsets. Now, I'm not bragging when I say that I have travelled the length and breadth of Malaysia (well, almost), and the sunsets elsewhere are not as mesmerising as those in Labuan. Trust me, nothing compares. One can just spend time lazing by the beach and bask in the glow of the sun as it hides itself far off in the horizon.
