Last evening, I had the opportunity to attend the wedding of a Nile Hippopotamus couple. Yup, you read right and your eyes didn't play tricks on you. HEHEHEHE Today, I am not talking about the wedding but about what I learned of hippopotamus through the event that I attended. 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰? Hippopotamuses spend most of their rest time in water, up to 16 hours per day. Adult hippos can stay fully submerged in water for up to 6 minutes, by closing their nostrils and ears. Young hippos can only stay underwater for about half a minute. Hippos spend so much time fully submerged in the water that they do almost everything underwater, including sleeping (only resurfacing to breathe every 3 - 5 minutes without even waking up), making love and feeding their young. Despite being fully submerged, they are still alert to their surroundings. Adult hippos are very large and heavy, even though they are herbivores and only feed on fruits and vegetables. So, anyone who tells you to lose weight by going vegetarian, don't believe them. Just look at hippos! In these photos, the male is approximately 8 - 10 years old and weighs 1 ton, while the female is about 21 years old, at 1.4 tons in weight! Despite their size and bulk, they can swim easily in water by kicking their hind legs, or even walk at the bottom of the lake, if it's not too deep. The Nile Hippo is native to the Nile River in Egypt. Also, we all know how mosquitoes can kill humans and in fact, they are the number 1 kill. Well, the hippos come in a close second. They are predators and very territorial. Look closely at the photos of the male hippo, you can see all the scratches on his back.
