Mars colonization is about the future of the human race. A future we won't see, but an important step for ensuring we survive as a species. The ability to colonize other planets allows us to spread out across the Galaxy and make it so if an extinction level event happens on Earth (like an aid crashing into Earth), we don't go extinct. If you don't think the survival of the human species is important, that's ok. But if we're going to survive we need to be able to move to other planets and in time to other solar systems and possibly even other galaxies.
I'd rather see large space stations orbiting earth than a Mars colony. I think space exploration is best done by unmanned craft. As AI gets better, we could have robot colonies on Mars, which humans would only visit briefly. Until we develop the technology to alter the human body, (a frightening thought!), I think we're best off where we are.
I agree. Humans are designed to function in the physical parameters found here, not on Mars. We should use our technology and intelligence to make this planet as habitable as possible. If we have the need for "men in space", (okay, I'll bow to political correctness, and change this to "people in space"), then we can have large space stations orbiting earth.
