Domestic violence ***This can be a very difficult topic to discuss, particularly when the situation is in a family member or close friend's home. What should we do? Why does it happen? And how can I help?*** Domestic violence is a pattern of violent and controlling behavior among family members or intimate partners that expresses the perpetrator's need to control another person and make them feel powerless. The goal is to control their behavior and make them feel afraid so that the perpetrator gets his or her way. ***The most common misrepresentation surrounding domestic violence is that men are only abusive towards women.*** However, this is untrue as domestic violence occurs in same-sex relationships and among both men and women.

A common thread in many cases of domestic abuse is that the abuser tends to be male and the victim female, especially when children are present in the relationship. There are many different types of domestic violence. If a family member or someone you love is being abused, it can leave them feeling upset, confused, frightened and frustrated. But there is help on hand. Domestic violence is abuse between people who are related, married or living together. Abusers may be men or women. ·        *Domestic violence causes physical injuries and emotional harm and can ruin relationships and families. It’s not easy to talk about, but an important step towards getting help is to admit that it’s happening.* ·        *Domestic violence affects people of all ethnicities, ages, sexual orientations and economic backgrounds. The abuse can be physical, psychological or sexual and abusers can use a range of tactics to control the person they’re violent towards.* Domestic violence is a serious social problem around the world. While statistics regarding men's violence against men aren't readily available, we do know that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

Domestic violence occurs among people who are married or co-habitating as well as among people who are dating or living together. Domestic violence can be ·        physical, ·        sexual, ·        emotional and ·        psychological. Commonly, victims of domestic abuse are women; however women are also perpetrators of abuse and violence. Domestic violence is about one person exerting power and control over another. Abusers typically use a number of tactics: psychological, physical, sexual and economic to control their partner and maintain the abuse over time. Domestic violence lasts for years and affects every area of a victim's life. Over time, the progress and freedom desired by a victim can be heavily hindered by her or his relationship with the abuser. While there are choices that victims can make to help move forward, they often feel trapped in their situation and become trapped by feelings of hopelessness.
