It's been a long week, but here we are again! FULL ALBUM FRIDAY! Today's "full album" is a bit unique in that the whole album is literally just one long (one hour and a bit) song. [DISCLAIMER] The song makes some references to smoking marijuana. If that's a sensitive topic, this song probably isn't for you. I'm not gonna judge either way - I don't smoke myself, but I have no qualms with people who do. That's my personal take. (Scroll to the very bottom for the link if this is tl;dr lol) Dopesmoker by the band Sleep was several years in the making, and a story of determination for completion. The song was written over four years during sound checks and touring and was intended from the very start to be at least an hour and was at one point renamed to "Jerusalem" They were originally given money and approval by one record label to get it done, but upon completion the label wasn't happy with the work and wouldn't release it. They faced this same issue with a few different labels until they were finally able to get it recorded and released. The recording process itself was also difficult for the band. Despite the fact that they'd played the song live several times by this point, getting it on tape proved to be a new struggle as the band found the song taking a turn from what they had planned. The recorded version was played much slower from the original versions that they had practiced in the past, and the immense amount of music they had to memorize also made it quite difficult. To add to matters, the reel-to-reel tapes they recorded on could only hold 22 minutes of music at a time, so the band were forced to break it down into 3 sections and record it in bits. The entire process took about 2 months with a small break in between to practice. In the end, they ended up with a few different versions of the song. By the time all the work had been done and the album was finally released, the band had fallen far into debt. Most of what they earned on this album went straight into debt recovery.
