Biometrics Hype May Kill the Entire Digital Identity Ecosystem

Digital identity is the most valuable personal data. <> If our digital identities are problematic, all our online data also face issues. All our online engagements, logins, transactions, etc., are under the digital identities we use every day. It includes fiat banking, cryptocurrencies, and all online accounts. <> One trending hype in digital identity verification is biometrics technology. But biometrics recognition is probabilistic and NOT deterministic! <> That opens a big room of problems for digital identities! What is the problem if biometrics recognition is not deterministic? Since biometrics recognition is probabilistic, a lot of problems arise. <> Biometrics can yield false acceptance and false rejection. One person's identity may get incorrectly recognized as another person's identity. Some persons may be continually rejected to log in to their digital accounts. For example, a son may succeed in unlocking his mother's 3D face ID on his mother's iPhone. Or you may be continually rejected from logging in to your bank account with your valid biometrics credential. And these issues have been regularly reported in several test use cases of biometrics authentication projects. Biometrics is unreliable due to its probabilistic trait. I can't help writing that biometrics recognition is unreliable and lowers the security of associated authentication processes. The "I am the digital identity" idea may eventually destroy the entire digital identity ecosystem. If biometrics is set to the default authentication factor, problems will creep into all online transactions, including fiat banking, cryptocurrencies, and more. Biometrics hype may eventually kill the entire digital identity ecosystem **(><)** ***Based on my short update post on*** ***LinkedIn******.*** https://www.linkedin.com/posts/debeshchoudhury_biometrics-digitalidentity-authentication-activity-7076501307259240449-AaqZ My LinkedIn post is getting noticed. One senior guy asked, "What is the alternative of biometrics?" as if biometrics is an obligation even if it lowers security! ***Cheers!*** ***Unity (********Debesh Choudhury**********)***** https://twitter.com/debeshchoudhury/
