Sinusitis and Colds Sinusitis occurs when the area around the nasal passages (sinuses) becomes swollen. Its inflammation closes the passage, so it is difficult for the sinuses to remove the blockage. Its pain results for inflammation when a cold is formed on it. Its symptoms are pain around the eyes or cheeks, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose, yellow or green mucus in the nose or down your throat. Acute sinusitis is usually caused by a cold. Chronic sinusitis may be due to infection, allergies, nasal polyps or deviated septum. Advice on sinusitis and colds: 1. Apply a warm compress. Apply a warm wet towel to the nose, face, and eyes to relieve pain. 2. Drink plenty of water or other beverages. Water helps to dilute the cold and loosen its vessels. Avoid drinking coffee and alcohol, as it can be dehydrating. 3. Steam the sinuses. This will help relieve pain and eliminate phlegm. Cover your head with a towel and carefully inhale the water vapor from the basin of stagnant water. Keep that its steam is directly on your face. Or take a hot bath and inhale its wet steam. 4. Get enough rest. This will help your body fight the infection and heal quickly. 5. Sleep with your head up. This will help for your sinuses to loosen. 6. Nasal lavage. It washes the nasal passages (lavage) and removes excess cold and dirt and also helps to reduce inflammation of the sinuses. Lavage is like a syringe bulb or neti pot. 7. Beware of decongestant nasal sprays. The decongestant nasal spray helps to relieve the cold medium, but you can only use it 1 time in 1 day for a short period of up to 3 days only. Consult your doctor if symptoms do not change after a few days or if they get worse, or if there is a history of recurrent or chronic sinusitis. If your sinusitis is the result of a bacterial infection, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic or other medication. #GoodAdvices
