My heart just keeps on breaking... Went with my baby sister to go visit my Dad at the nursing home he is in today. Hadn't seen him for almost 2½ weeks since he got transferred from the hospital here to a nursing home 21 miles/34 km away from where I live. He is in better shape than I last saw him, but he is living inside a universe created in his mind...while physically active, he is interacting with things in his imagination. I was there for a bit over an hour, and he doesn't have a clue I was there, just kept focusing his eyes where no one was standing and muttering unintelligibly to them. Picking items out of thin air, looking them over in his hands, laying the item down on the arm of his chair and reaching for something else. Sometimes life is like a hard kick in the testicles.

My father suffered dementia for 2 years before he died, and so did my mother. It is a terrifying disease and difficult to understand. I just hope they are happy in his world and in that way it is a relief to me. Perhaps many think the same. I think the important thing is to remember them in their most productive and happy moments.
My father was much older than my mother. My father has been gone since I was 17. He got sick when I was 12. I can remember going to visit him and he didn't know who I was. He didn't even know who my mother was. It was hard but I was still glad he was alive. Precious moments.
