I had promised myself it wouldn’t happen this time. My heart began pounding like a funeral drum. Cold sweat gathered on my forehead, goosebumps spread over my skin, and my palms and feet turned icy. It felt as though all my energy was draining away. The very thought of my boss sent shivers down my spine — his towering figure, his deep voice that could rumble like thunder. I was terrified… helplessly terrified. What do I say this time? Tell the plain truth? Or shift the blame? Blaming others comes so easily… but I couldn’t decide. Then I heard it: “Late again! What’s the excuse this time?” My heart raced faster. My blood pressure seemed to rocket past the normal limit. My lips felt glued shut. But somehow, the words escaped: “I’m sorry. It’s my fault. I woke up late.” He looked at me for a few seconds, then — to my surprise — said calmly, “It’s okay. I’m happy you spoke the truth.” I was about to ask how he knew, but he interrupted, “The truth is in your eyes… and I see it.” Phew! No sanction today. Silently, I whispered in my heart, Lord, thank You for helping me out. By lunch, I felt lighter. At closing time, I found a note on my desk: “All I ever wanted was the truth, not excuses.
