Civil Engineer REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A CIVIL ENGINEER ● PROGRAM REVIEW ー The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BS CE) program is a five-year program designed to teach students the basic principles of science and mathematical tools used in engineering. The program covers the five essential fields of civil engineering: • Structural engineering • Transportation engineering • Water resources engineering • Geo-technical engineering • Construction engineering and management. ● RECOMMENDED SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STRAND ー Students who want to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering are encouraged to take the STEM strand under the Academic Track. ● SUBJECTS AND CURRICULUM • Building Design • Structural Design • Hydraulics • Hydrology • Civil Engineering Law • Construction Methods • Project Management • Engineering Mathematics ● ADMISSIONS AND REQUIREMENTS QUALIFICATIONS ー The student must be a high school graduate. However, if they were not able to graduate high school, they may opt to take the Alternative Learning System (ALS) and pass the Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT) to qualify for college; the availability of courses for PEPT passers depend on the university. ー The students must pass the College Admissions Test of the university. BASIC REQUIREMENTS • Form 138 - High School Report Card (Original and Photocopy) • Recommendation letter from High school principal and guidance counselor • Most recent medical and dental health record • Copy of NSO Certified birth certificate • Certificate of Good moral character • Copy of honorable dismissal • Copy of high school diploma • (1) Latest 2”x2” ID Picture ● PROGRAM OUTCOME ー Graduates of Civil Engineering are expected to be able to: • Solve complex engineering problems using application of mathematics and science knowledge. • Conduct engineering procedures professionally and ethically. • Effectively communicate civil engineering activities with the engineering community and with the society. • Understand the impact of civil engineering solutions globally, economically, and environmentally. • Use up to date techniques, skills, and engineering tools for engineering procedures. • Understand at least one specialized field of civil engineering. ● PSYCHICAL ATTRIBUTES AND CHARACTERISTICS • Can handle extreme pressure. • Willing to work extended hours if needed. • Creative and imaginative. • Ability to see details at close range. • Capable of organizing, coordinating and supervising workers. ● ON-THE-HAND TRAINING/INTERNSHIP ーDuring the fourth year of the program, students are required to attend an On the Job Training (OJT) in various development companies specializing in civil works and infrastructures. ー Students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in an actual work setting. Usually, universities require them to submit a written report on their tasks, learning experiences, and hours rendered. Their work performance will also be evaluated by their immediate managers and will be submitted to their respective OJT coordinator. The number of hours required may differ in each university. ● BOARD EXAM ー To become a Licensed Civil Engineer in the Philippines, a graduate of Civil Engineering needs to pass the Civil Engineering Licensure Examination. The examination is conducted by the Board of Civil Engineering under the supervision of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC). It is scheduled twice a year in the months of May and November. ● CAREER AND OPPORTUNITIES ー Graduates of Civil Engineering may pursue a career path in any development company that focuses on civil engineering works. They may apply as a structural engineer, project engineer, staff engineer, inspectors, associate engineer, educator, or city planner. SALARY/COMPENSATION ー Engineer receives a monthly salary ranging from P17,000 - P25,000 depending on the type of employer. In the U.S., a Civil Engineer receives a monthly salary of $4,300 (208,724.15 Pesos) to $6,400 (310,659.20 Pesos), again depending on the type of employer. In other foreign countries, pay and benefits are definitely higher than local rates.
