Mining and its experience / La minería y sus vivencias My dear friends of read.cash.... Having studied one of the careers that deals with earth sciences, has allowed me to grow and assume tasks with leadership in teams. Geology is a passion that makes me always be attentive to everything around me, an inevitable and almost intrinsic link with nature and its living beings. It has allowed me to know enigmatic and indescribable places, because each place has unique landscapes. But what I am going to talk about today is more about the experience of being in areas where artisanal mining has its own system. I say system, because life has particular characteristics that even within a state, cohabit in its wide extension, the diversity of actors that in many cases are denominated as organized underworld, but that call themselves for decades ago as unions or the System. Life in the mining areas is sometimes chaotic, very rough and demanding, from the miner who leaves his house every day to look for luck in a ravine or in the rivers, always prepared and equipped, as well as those who go days and even months into conflictive areas to support their families. The miners are present in several states of my country, from the Orinoco delta in Puerto Ayacucho, through all of Bolivar and the Amazon, where they coexist with miners from other countries (Colombia and Brazil). ***Territorial control: a necessary clarification*** The organization of these gangs today has evolved for various reasons, and I suppose that one of them, undoubtedly for survival, has to do with the organic, beyond the use of weapons to subdue and control the territory, now they have organic groups that are in charge of the non-military. It is something like the "political" wing and the military wing. The truth is that the control of the zones by organic factions, allows them to guarantee a social peace determined by the collection of vaccines from cattle ranchers, small producers and artisanal miners; the private business sectors do not escape from this practice. There are areas of constant disputes, where the use of firearms is a daily occurrence. The confrontations between organized gangs can last for days and even months, where the state turns a blind eye until they tend to affect entire communities, and it is there where the force of the state makes itself felt, breaking up for a short time this problem that has become a cancer for a part of society, which has learned to deal with this situation. ***About mining*** Mining has several connotations from the geological point of view, since it will depend on the level or methods of prospecting, extraction and processing to obtain the mineral. Geology is a cognitive tool that allows in the field to determine which areas are good for the extraction of precious minerals. The historical processes and special satellite imaging tools, together with the geological studies of the formations in the region, allow to define and calculate approximately how much can be recovered for the investment to be profitable. There the studies that I made to be a professional in the area, I met people who have worked empirically in mining, without deep studies and without the tools that the university gives you, they gave me another type of extra-university class, the one that only the years of hard work teaches you, with their own concepts and definitions they build in their own way a reasoned study of the geology to find the mineral. On the other hand, artisanal miners in the search for gold walk hours and even days to reach the sites where they can run with the luck of finding the ore by choosing crushed material by hand and placing them in pans (kind of flattened conical pot) where the ore falls by decantation to the bottom of the pan because it has greater density. This type of mining has its well-defined legal norms authorized by state institutions. ***From the experiences told by miners*** Living together with the miners, just as they live in those areas, sleeping in hammocks and without the comforts of the city, having gained the necessary confidence, one night like any other, after a hard day's work, we sat down to play dominoes or truco, and between games we talked about the experiences of those who had been through several mines. There, one story was more interesting than another, one was more terrible than the other? So I learned how in other areas controlled by other unions, the fight for territorial control always led to a pitiful bloodbath for those who have nothing to do with the mafias and innocent people pay with their lives for the mere fact of being in the mining areas. It is important to clarify that not only nationals come to these lands of gold, but also many undocumented foreigners with the hope of taking a little bit of the precious mineral. Well... Continuing with the stories, there was one that really captured me.... One of the miners came from being in an area called Las Claritas, in the south of Bolivar state in Venezuela, where mining is done by cylinders, which can reach more than 80 meters deep and with my many galleries from which the ore is extracted. A construction made by miners, which consists of circular excavations with a diameter of 2mts totally vertical, with galleries (tunnels) at different depths. The friend told me that on one occasion, a heavily armed group began a fierce battle with another for control of the area, a war literally, where the one who ran lost his life, and whoever could hide without being seen would have a chance to live. Another story has to do with the extraction method, where the organic points to a planned punctual work, but totally devastating for nature. The use of high horsepower equipment to generate water pressures that crush the earth, knocking down immense extensions of land at great depths, with the indiscriminate use of mercury, until the precious mineral is extracted. This illegal mining is the one that constitutes a very high danger for nature and therefore for human beings, since most of the affected areas are hundreds of kilometers away from any village, town or city. ***Artisanal mining*** Having shared with artisanal miners I have learned a lot. First, because one of the things that the university does not teach is to put the human above everything else. In the mines there are those who are in charge of loading the selected material and there are veteros whose life experience indicates where the mineral is, an empirical geologist from whom I also learned in every place I have been. There are also miners who walk a whole day or several days, to get with their artisanal equipment to areas where there is gold, and they can be lucky enough to get 1 gram of gold per day.... In general, these miners get between one and 5 points (thousandths of gold) per day, which is enough to live on a daily basis and support their families. ***Of the disadvantages*** The biggest drawback in the production of ore at all levels, is our beloved nature, since at the beginning of the rainy season, makes the extraction of raw material is very uphill, because the cylinders with their galleries tend to flood very quickly, even if you have pumping equipment, and if the extraction is open pit rain wreaks havoc with the machinery and cargo transport. When the conditions are extreme in drought, there are also enormous difficulties, since all artisanal or industrial process works with large amounts of water. Another of the inconveniences that occur on a daily basis touches the mining industry in a very human way... Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, especially malaria. An enormous rate of malaria patients. Many miners do not manage to get rid of this dangerous disease. ***The end product*** For both large and small companies and gold artisans, it is essential to have social peace in order to be able to produce, although unfortunately this is not always the case. Gold, a precious mineral that can be found in nuggets or through artisanal milling processes or industrially through cyanidation process, and that to extract it industrially requires enormous resources, which undoubtedly is paid by gold, for being a costly mineral... Pero de lo que les voy a hablar hoy, va más hacia la experiencia que se vive al estar en zonas donde la minería artesanal tiene su propio sistema. Digo sistema, porque la vida tiene características particulares que aún dentro de un estado, cohabitan en su amplia extensión, la diversidad de actores que en muchos casos son denominados como hampa organizada, pero que se autodenominan desde hace décadas atrás como sindicatos o el Sistema. La vida en las zonas mineras es a veces caótica, es muy ruda y exigente, desde el minero que todos los días sale de su casa a buscar suerte en un barranco o en los ríos, siempre preparados y equipados, así cmo los que se adentra días y hasta meses enteros en zonas conflictivas para llevar el sustento a sus familias. Los mineros tienen presencia en varios estados de mi país, desde el delta del Orinoco en Puerto Ayacucho, pasando por todo Bolívar y en el Amazonas, donde conviven con los mineros de otros países (Colombia y Brasil). ***Control territorial: una necesaria aclarataoria*** La organización de estas bandas hoy día han evolucionado por diversas razones, y supongo que una de ellas, indudablemente es por sobrevivencia, tiene que ver con lo orgánico, más allá del uso de las armas para someter y controlar el territorio, ahora tienen los grupos orgánicos que se encargan de lo no militar. Es algo así como el ala "política" y el ala militar. Lo cierto es que el control de las zonas por facciones orgánicas, le permiten garantizar una paz social determinada por el cobro de vacunas a los ganaderos, pequeños productores y mineros artesanales, los sectores empresariales privados no escapan de esta práctica. Existen zonas de disputas constantes, donde el uso de las armas de fuego son el día a día. Los enfrentamientos entre bandas organizadas pueden durar días y hasta meses, donde el estado se hace de la vista gorda hasta que tienden a afectar comunidades enteras, y es allí donde la fuerza del estado se hace sentir disgregando por poco tiempo está problemática que se ha convertido en un cáncer para una parte de la sociedad, que vale decir a aprendido a lidiar con esta situación. ***Sobre la mineria*** La minería tiene varias connotaciones desde el punto de vista geológico, puesto que ella va a depender del nivel o de los métodos de prospección, extracción y procesamiento para la obtención del mineral. Siendo la geología una herramienta cognoscitiva que permite en campo determinar que áreas son buenas para la extracción de minerales preciosos. Los procesos históricos y las herramientas de imágenes sateitales especiales, permiten junto a los estudios geológicos de las formaciones en la región definir y calcular aproximadamente cuánto puede recuperarse para que la inversión sea rentable. Allí los estudios que realice para ser profesional en el área, se encontró con personas que ha trabajado empíricamente la minería, sin estudios profundos y sin las herramientas que la universidad te da, me dieron otro tipo de clase extra universitaria, esa que solo los años de arduo trabajo te enseña, con con conceptos y definiciones propias van construyendo a su manera un estudio razonado de la geología para hallar el mineral. Por otro lado, los mineros artesanales en la búsqueda de oro caminan horas y hasta días para llegar a los sitios donde puedan correr con la suerte de hallar el mineral mediante la escogencia de material triturado a mano y colocándolos en bateas (especie de olla cónica achatada) donde el mineral cae por decantacion al fondo de la batea debido a que tiene mayor densidad. Asi mismo hay quienes tienen un molino (motor con mecanismo triturador) donde procesan el material pre triturado, en el check y las planchas de cobre o bronce azogadas (con mercurio), son los sitios trabajados para que quede el oro atrapado en el azogue, las Arenas con agua pasan, decantando el oro en el check y las planchas. Acá, en este proceso, las Arenas se van depositando en unas taquillas, donde se estima que el 80 % del mineral se va en las Arenas y el 20% aproximadamente es el que aprovechan los mineros en los molinos. Otra forma de extracción, es a cielo abierto. Un trabajo realizado por maquinaria de grandes proporciones, con afectación de espacios físicos naturales irreversibles. Este tipo de minería tiene sus normas legales bien definidas autorizadas por la institucionalida estatal. ***De las experiencias contadas por mineros*** Estando conviviendo junto a los mineros, tal cual ellos viven en esas zonas, durmiendo en hamaca y sin las comodidades que en la ciudad se tiene, ganada la confianza necesaria, una noche como cualquier otra, después de una jornada ruda de trabajo, nos sentamos a jugar domino o truco, entre juego y juego fuimos conversando sobre las experiencias vividas de los que han pasado por varias minas. Allí, una historia era más interesante que otra, una era más terrible que la otra... Así que me fui enterando del como en otros espacios controlados por otros sindicatos, la pelea por el control territorial llevaba siempre a un baño de sangre lamentable para quienes nada tienen que ver con las mafias e inocentes pagan con sus vidas por el solo hecho de estar en las zonas mineras. Es importante aclarar que no sólo connacionales llegan a estas tierras del oro, llegan también muchos extranjeros indocumentados con la esperanza de llevarse un poquito del preciado mineral. Bueno... Continuando con las historias, hubo una de ellas que realmente me capturo... Uno de los mineros venía de estar en una zona llamada Las Claritas, hace el sur del estado Bolívar en Venezuela, donde la minería se trabaja por cilindros, que pueden llegar a más de 80 mts de profundidad y con mi muchísimas galerías de donde sacan el mineral. Una construcción realizada por mineros, que trata de excavaciones circulares de diámetro de 2mts totalmente verticales, con galerías (túneles) a diversas profundidades. El amigo me contaba que en una ocasión, un grupo fuertemente armado comenzó una fiera batalla con otro por el control de la zona, una guerra literalmente, donde el que corría perdía la vida, y quien podía ocultarse sin que lo vieran tendría oportunidad de vivir. Lamentablemente hubo una racia casi total... Sin que nadie reclamara algo o a alguien. El amigo sobrevivió porque en pleno ataque tomó la decisión de lanzarse por uno de los cilindros, ocultándose por más de 3 días, bebiendo agua solamente, al salir no miró a nadie, se metió selva adentro hasta salir a la carretera nacional. Otra de las historias, tiene que ver con el método de extracción, donde lo orgánico apunta a un trabajo puntual planificado, pero totalmente devastador para la naturaleza. El uso de equipos de alto caballaje para generar presiones de agua que trituran la tierra, tumbando a grandes profundidades inmensas extensiones de terreno, con el uso indiscriminado de mercurio, hasta lograr sacar el preciado mineral. Esta minería ilegal es la que constituye un peligro altísimo para la naturaleza y por ende para el ser humano, puesto que las zonas mayormente afectadas están a cientos de kilómetros de distancia de cualquier caserío, pueblo o ciudad. ***De la minería artesanal*** Haber compartido con mineros artesanales me deja mucho aprendizaje. Primero porque una de las cosas que la universidad no enseña, es poner lo humano por encima de todo. En las minas hay quines se encargan de cargar el material seleccionado y hay veteros quienes la experiencia de vida indica donde está el mineral, un geológo empírico del cual también aprendí en cada sitio que he estado. También existen mineros que caminan todo un día o varios, para llegar con sus equipos artesanales a zonas donde hay oro, y pueden correr con la suerte de sacar al día 1gramo de oro... Por lo general estos mineros sacan por día trabajado, entre uno y 5 puntos (milésimas de oro), lo necesario para poder vivir el día a día y llevar el sustento a sus familias. ***De los inconvenientes*** El mayor inconveniente en la producción del mineral en todos los niveles, es nuestra amada naturaleza, puesto que al iniciar las temporadas de lluvia, hace que la extracción de la materia prima sea muy cuesta arriba, debido a que los cilindros con sus galerías tienden a inundarse con mucha rapidez, así cuentes con equipos de Bombeo, y si la extracción es a cielo abierto la lluvia hace estragos con la maquinaria y transporte de carga. Cuando las condiciones son extremas en sequía, también se presentan dificultades enormes, ya que todo proceso artesanal o Industrial trabaja con grandes cantidades de agua. Otro de los inconvenientes que se presentan con cotidianidad toca muy en lo humano la minero... Las enfermedades transmitidas por los mosquitos, en especial el paludismo. Una tasa enorme de enfermos de paudismo. Muchos mineros no logran salir de esta peligrosa enfermedad. El producto final Tanto para las grandes, pequeñas empresas y artesanos del oro, es imprescindible tener paz social para poder producir, aunque no siempre es así lamentablemente. El oro, un mineral precioso que bien puede encontrase en cochanos (pepitas) o a través de procesos de molienda artesanal o industrialmente mediante proceso de cianuracion, y que para extraerlo industrialmente necesita de ingentes recursos, que indudablemente lo paga el oro, por ser un mineral costoso... Ejemplo de ello es que a principios de año 1 grama de oro equivalía a 51 dólares y hoy, mes de junio, la grama la pagan a 54 dólares...
