Why do horror movies, and the horror genre in general continue to have such appeal? I think part of it, aside from people liking to be afraid sometimes—especially when they know in their hearts they are perfectly safe—is that life can be chaotic and even sometimes a little bit dangerous. I think horror can help the mind to sort of sift through all of the chaos and danger and helps one to navigate it better. Helps one to make more sense of it all. And of course, in the end good usually does triumph over evil. The monster is almost always defeated, and even if it is not, it is at least put into dormancy for a little while. It gives someone a sense of hope that not all is ever lost even in the worst of possible situations, that demons can be overcome, and that in the end life can go on as normal. Besides, a good horror movie or a good horror story is just fun. Perhaps that's what gives a roller coaster such appeal as well.
