Part of the problem of the "student loan forgiveness" debate happening in the United States is that a) the wrong message is being sent and b) taxpayers who never went to college would now be forced to pay the way of someone who did. On the issue of the message, when one decides to go to college they are taking on certain responsibilities in making that choice. One of those responsibilities is of course PAYING for that choice just like anyone pays for any other choice they make in life, whether it is buying a home or buying a car or buying anything for that matter. College education is not a right. It is a privilege. Frankly I think most college is a waste of money. But that's a different debate. The simple fact of the matter is that it is never a good idea to allow someone to take on debt and then expect other people to pay it back for them. Beyond that, we have much bigger issues that need to be tackled right now. This debate needs to be on the back burner. While people are struggling with inflation and loss of purchasing power, and while the government is already saddled with debt, people are asked to pay MORE? Ridiculous.
