The state of mobile games is disappointing.. I tested some of them recently and all were total scams, pay-to-win garbage with limited entertainment value and limited gameplay. No skill is involved, but competitiveness is based on solely who pays more for better items. Terrible approach by money hungry scammer devs.

Which did you test? I find games on Hive be pretty good experimental with lots of economics to explore. I know, I know, you're no fan of that chain. Yet trading NFTs like paper cards back in the 90ies on a global scale is going on there pretty silently with some .... anyway
One that I remember the title is called blade of chaos. This was the most greedy I found as it was asking for payments for a countless number of perks that would offer an advantage and most of the payments seem mandatory to be slightly competitive and reach at $100 per month as a minimum. It appears that some people are spending thousands of dollars every month just to stay competitive. I also suspect that admins of the game are attempting to challenge them with fake accounts and push them to spend way more than required to remain competitive. Admins get all the perks and bonuses for free and create super accounts on each server that dominate until they milk as much money as possible from unaware victims that suffer from a complex of superiority.
Ok, I see. None of what I experienced on any Hive game. While stake is definitely an issue. So if a game is fun, it's still Play for Fun.
Hive games and almost every other game related to a blockchain is more or less a Ponzi scheme.
As you may know I don't fully agree to your statement. But I can see that it's valuable for you.
