After starting out professionally with Vitória and then playing three years in Japan, he went on to play several seasons in Portugal with Porto.

Hulk made his position in international team in 2009, and played for Brazil at the 2012 Summer Olympics.He went on to represent the Brazilian senior team in their victory at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and fourth-place finish at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
