@OldBastard more from that month

A Busy Night! We had an exciting night last night. Our first excitement occurred when we got home from shopping. While we had been gone, LBC had delivered seventeen, (17!), extra large balikbayan boxes to our house! There were boxes everywhere, and even some on the porch, as there wasn't enough room inside to fit all seventeen of them. The pic shows six of these boxes. Imagine trying to find room for eleven more! Of course my wife, her sister, and their mama couldn't wait until morning, and started tearing into the boxes immediately. The result was clothes and other miscellaneous household stuff being scattered all over the place. The boys quickly found whatever goodies were hidden in the boxes, and began to feast on American snacks. Our older son discovered a bag of cookies. He shared one with his younger brother, and so began our second round of excitement. Our younger son is allergic to hazelnuts. Whenever he wants to eat a cookie, my wife always makes sure it doesn't have any nuts in it, just to be on the safe side. But she was busy flitting through some pile of clothes or another when he got the cookie last night, so no one checked to ensure it was safe for him to eat. I'm sure you can guess what happened. Soon our younger son began to complain about how the nuts in the cookie made his mouth feel weird, and he began to spit a bit. Clueless dolt that I am, I simply gave him some water and a lollipop, to get the bad taste out of his mouth. He continued to complain about the nuts, still spitting every now and then, and said his stomach hurt. Then he walked up to a trash can near where I was sitting, and began to vomit profusely. At this point even I could tell something was wrong, so I hollered for his mama. After a quick discussion with him, we decided to give him some benadryl. This of course made him sleepy, but I wasn't concerned, because he wasn't having difficulty breathing. Twenty minutes later the hives broke out. He got big, red swellings all over his body, like he had been attacked by a swarm of bees, or rolled in some nasty itchy weeds of some sort. Alarmed, my wife gave him the maximum safe dosage of benadryl, and insisted we drive him to the nearest hospital. Fortunately our brother-in-law, (the only person who can really drive safely around here), was available, so we climbed into the truck and sped off in the night for Molave, where the nearest hospital was located. The hospital experience was a good one. It was quick, inexpensive compared to health care in the USA, and, best of all, we were told our son would be fine, just watch him for a few more days. (Food allergies can be tricky things.) We got home late, hungry and flustered, (my wife and I hadn't eaten dinner yet), and tired, but still too anxious to go to sleep. So the whole household went to bed very late, including our brother-in-law, who no sooner had begun to sleep when he was awakened by the sound of young piglets. One of our mama pigs had just given birth!
