John Tries to Eat Balut Recently we went to a night market of sorts, where they sell balut. For some inexplicable reason my older son John decided he would try to eat some of this alleged "delicacy". In the first pic, we see John and his Uncle JC sizing up a saucer with three balut eggs in it. Uncle JC likes balut, and was showing John how to eat it. In the second pic Uncle JC is peeling one of the "rotten" eggs. This is already gross enough for me, so I had to back off. The third pic shows John thinking about what he got himself into. (I believe Uncle JC was explaining to him that you need to suck out the "insides" first, before eating the rest of the egg.) In the fourth pic, John finally takes a tentative bite. He then spit it out so quickly that I couldn't get a picture of it! Ugh! Too salty!! Other than that, John says that balut mostly tastes like an ordinary egg. I'll have to take him at his word, because there is NO WAY I'm putting one of those disgusting looking things into my mouth! Besides, he did not deal with the icky inner parts of the balut. The last pic shows Abby, a balut eating champ, demonstrating how to first suck out the yolk and baby bird parts, before eating the rest of the egg. Ugh!! I can't even imagine, (or more accurately, don't want to!), what the innards of these things look and taste like. Doesn't it make you wonder why people always seem to eat balut at night? #MyLife

i tried eating the chick once , but never again when I eat balut now I just eat the yellow part hahaha.

no. I just opn the egg. Sip the soup in it . Remove the shell and got the yellow part haha

Like many things in the Philippines, (driving, dogs and kids in the streets, how everybody seems to know what is going on without any means of communication), this is something I will never understand. But please enjoy your balut!
Here they have to eat them as a challenge in a tv show that is filmed on the Philippines.... together with cow eyes and huge ass worm's ..... I love exotic food but I do doubt my guts trying these things
The key word in that is "challenge". I can't imagine eating balut for enjoyment, but folks here do it.
Well they made me eat pig ears and snout in Italy which was pretty good.....but still can't compare that with balut
I tasted some grilled chicken intestines recently. They were okay. Not my favorite, but I could eat them in a pinch. If all I had to eat was balut, I might just starve.
That reminds me that when I was little an my mom had just divorced my dad we ate chicken hearts....its a huge effort cleaning them but it was one of my fav dishes those days....she never made those again once she met her new hubby till a couple of years back my brother asked for it.... I think I made them once but its a good dish
Sounds good if prepared properly. This reminds me of what we called "chitlins", hog intestines. They're a royal pain to prepare, and smell gross when cooking, but they taste pretty good.
Its delicious but yes not everyone loves it, some people eat only the yellow part and throw the other part of balut
Well, until I tried durian, I would have never thought it was delicious. But balut? No way!! But who am I to arbitrate what people like to eat? If you enjoy balut, have at it! I hope you have many, many "delicious" balut eggs in the future.

Really? Well, an excellent durian is like tasting heaven. Unfortunately not all durians are excellent, but most are good, or at worst okay. I can't imagine eating balut, but not durian!
