In Defense of Western Medicine This is a sorta rebuttal to my last post, "Is Western Medicine Dead?" ( https://noise.cash/post/lvvjkr65 ) When discussing Western Medicine, I think it is only fair to point out its successes. Smallpox, a once nasty, widespread disease, has been completely eradicated in the wild, according to the WHO. (Anybody trust them? And apparently smallpox still exists in a few labs around the world. I hope we don't have another Covid-19 type "accident" involving it!) Polio has been eliminated from most parts of the world. However, according to Wikipedia, the Philippines, (which is where I am at the moment), reported that in 2019 a three year old girl tested positive for this stupid disease. (All diseases suck; some suck more than others! I am friends with two older women who had polio as children. They both have had post-polio syndrome effects, and both gave birth to a severely retarded child. F*CK POLIO!!) We have a shot for rabies, which, if administered quickly enough after exposure, is usually effective. Western Medicine is also very good at treating acute conditions, such as a broken bone. A few years ago I got suddenly nauseous with a sharp pain in my lower right abdomen. After a visit to a medical clinic, I was admitted to the hospital and had emergency surgery to remove my appendix. When our first kid was being born, he got "stuck" in the birth canal. An emergency cesarean section probably saved both his life and my wife's. He had also "pooped" in the womb, and ingested it. This is apparently very dangerous for newborns. His first experience in the world was having the fluid suctioned out of his digestive system. The point of all this is to point out, both from the perspective of major accomplishments, and my own personal experiences, that Western Medicine does do some really, really wonderful things. Where it tends to encounter problems is with chronic conditions, especially cancer. Perhaps we simply need to admit that we can not fix all health problems, rather than making sick people sicker and causing their final days to be miserable? FIRST DO NO HARM! #Medicine
