Plants and their Sweet Scents ***Before We Read--*** In the Philippines, there are plants which are known for their being sweet scented flowers, leaves and roots. The sampaguita, jasmine.champaca, ilang-ilang, camia rosal (gardenia), and milloguas are known for their strong sweet odors. The dama de noche also has a sweet odor especially in the evening. The leaves of the ,valvarosa (rose geranium), sambong and guava give out odors which are known to cure dizziness or nausea. What is your favorite flower? Why is it your favorite? Is it sweet-scented? The facts about some of our sweet scented flowers will widen your knowledge about plants and flowers. Sampaguita The sampaguita was chosen as the national flower ofour country because ofita popularity, fragrance and the role it plays in the legends and traditions ofthe Filipino people. This shrub was introduced into our country from India.It is Bhort-stemmcd and has glossy, hardy leaves, six to twclve centimr_.terslong. The flowers are gmall, fragrant. pure white and glossy. Theylook like small roses from a distance. This pIant bears plenty of flowers in April, May and June. The sampaguita is often cultivated in our country for commercial and ornamental purposes. Garlands or leis of sampaguita are peddled in the streets of Manila and in some provinces all year round. The sampaguita is known all over the Philippines. Songs and poems have been written about the small but fragrant flower. **Dama de noche** Do you know that there are flowers that open after dark and spread their sweet scent only at night? The dama de noche is an example of such flowers. Dama de Noche-is a Spanish name meaning "lady of the night." This flower was given this name because of its evening fragrance. The dama de noche is a climbing bush with long, drooping branches. Its green, acute leaves are arranged alternately on its long branches. Its small flowers, which grow in a kind of cluster called racemes, are light greenish and very fragrant. A flower of the dama de noche is like a tiny star attached to a lorig, slender funnel ending in a tiny light-greenish calyx.

Energy **The meaning of Energy** Energy is the ability to do work. Where there is growth, movement. or change, there is energy. Ail people have energy. Plants ana animals nave it, too. Machines, both big and small, also have energy. What would our world be like without energy? Nothing move. Nothing would grow.There would be no light, no warmth. no sound. There would be no people. no plants, no animals. We would have a dead. still world. But we do have energy-and we get it from the sun. **Indirect Energy** **How do plants,** animals and ourselves get energy from the sun? The light and heat of the sun help to make plants grow. The sun's energy is Stored in the plants. We eat food that comes from, these plants. We eat food that comes from the animals which eat the plants. Some examples of these kinds of food are rice, bread and meat. Rice comes from a plant. Bread is made from flour. Flour is made from wheat, which, in turn, is the seed from a plant. Meat comes from animals that eat plants or their fruit or grams. Thus, animals and ourselves get energy from 1he sun everytime we eat. How do machines get energy from the sun? Some machines- cars, trains, airplanes, and others-burn fuel like oil, gas, or coal. These fuels come from deep inside the earth. For example, we dig mines to get coal..We dig wells to get oil or gas. How did these fuels get into the earth? All fuels were living plants and animals once. While they were living they got their energy from the sun. When they died. they became part of the soil. Over the years. they were pressed farther and farther down into the earth. As they were pressed farther clown, the heat of the earth worked on them and changed them into fuel. And where did the heat of the earth come from? It came from the sun! So the fuel that makes machines go is really energy from the sun. Was the sun used directly to give energy? No, it was not. What was used was the result of the light and heat of the sun which was stored in the plants, the animals, and the fuel. What was used was indirect energy. **Direct Energy** Today, scientists are looking for ways to capture the rays of the sun 1or direct use. One of these is to capture and store the heat to make electricity. This is called solar energy. Some time pieces and calculators today are run by solar energy. A few people have experimented with the use of solar energy to light their homes and IQ run household appliances like refrigerators. Indeed since the sun shines in our country most of the time, we could use solar energy or direct energy to lessen our dependence on imported fuels.

Covid-19 Pandemic Experience:Ethical Theories Injection The *COVID*-19 pandemic that was spread rapidly around the world gives a severe impact in people’s lives. About millions of life ends, the economy of every country was pulled down and the educational system is also affected in the whole country, leading to the near total closure of schools, universities and colleges. The Department of Health conducts a lot of precaution control and safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone such as social distancing and cover coughs and sneezes with elbow or tissue. Almost all work has stopped; so many people are now suffering in hunger. This pandemic leads depression on a person because there is a little economic activity and they do not have jobs to earn money for their family. But of course, it can also lead a serious medical condition because of the danger that was brought by this pandemic. The pandemic also caused serious issues in our society that leads people to think carefully on every decision or action that they are going to make; either the result of this is good or bad. There are some forms of ethical theories that we can apply in making a decision in our situation now a days. The deontology, states that people should adhere to their obligations and duties when engaged in decision making when ethics are in play. This means that a person will follow his or her obligations to another individual or society because upholding one’s duty is what is considered ethically correct. For instance, you will always keep a distance to your friend or other people because you are following the safety measures to prevent the circulating of the virus. The other form is the utilitarianism; the utilitarian ethical theories are based on one’s ability to predict the consequences of an action. To a utilitarian, the choice that yields the greatest benefit to the most people is the one that is ethically correct. But, there are two types of utilitarianism, act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism. The act utilitarianism subscribes precisely to the definition of utilitarianism where a person performs the acts that benefit the most people, regardless of personal feelings or the societal constraints such as laws. Rule utilitarianism takes into account the law and is concerned with fairness. A rule utilitarian seeks to benefit the most people but through the fairest and just means available. For example, in this pandemic, students use their voices to seek for the Mass Promotion or No to Online Classes οΏ½for the fairness because not all students have a stable internet connection and gadgets without violating any laws. Ethical theories provide part of the decision-making foundation for decision making when ethics are in play because these theories represent the viewpoints from which individuals seek guidance as they make decisions. Remember that it is important for us to realize that not everyone makes decisions in the same way, using the same information, and employing the same decision rules. According to Bulaong, Jr., et al, ethics deals with matters such as the good thing that we should pursue and the bad thing that we should avoid. So, in making decisions or actions, always remember what will be the result or possible consequences.
