Neuro, here we come... Let's learn about aphasias in simple terms. First, what is aphasia? It is a condition in which a person has difficulty expressing and understanding language both orally and in writing because of damage to the brain centers that control speech. Such damage is caused by tumors, stroke, infections, head injury, etc. The two most common types are: Broca's and Wernicke's Aphasia. Broca's Aphasia is a "broken speech." You cannot articulate words properly both in verbal (oral) and written form, that is, you have difficulty speaking clearly & fluently, so with writing. You find it hard to construct a sentence and often have grammatical errors. For example, you may say, 'glass drink', instead of 'Kindly give me a glass of water to drink.' But you can understand language because your comprehension is intact. This aphasia is also known as Expressive or Motor Aphasia and is usually associated with right leg weakness. In Wernicke's Aphasia, the person here is "wordy" or talkative. He babbles incessantly, his speech is fluent & clear, but the words are nonsensical, that is, the meaning of the words just mixed up, like a 'word salad.' And he doesn't understand what he's saying because his comprehension is not intact. This is also known as Receptive or Fluent aphasia and is not associated with any leg paralysis. So if you find yourself or other people to have problems expressing and understanding speech, you can consult a Neurologist for further medical work-up.
