I have seen an impressive amount of Arabs in my feed, saying "salam malekun" all the time and of course I have known for a long time what that means, but since I am very curious, I searched the internet using san google and found this interesting explanation. I will share below: "A flattering person is one who, in an excessive and exaggerated way, behaves in a flattering way, saying numerous compliments and flattering someone with the intention of pleasing and earning their favors and trust. To put it another way, a 'flattering' is the sweetened version of a 'ball' or 'lickers'. The etymological origin of the term is found in Arabic (like so many other words that have enriched our language and are part of it) 'salaam' whose meaning is 'peace' and which is widely used (among other things) as a greeting, for example the famous 'salam aleikum' (May peace be with you) with which the Muslims begin their greeting. From there it went to ‘zalama’ (wish for peace), being used with the suffix –ero (smoothie) to call that one who was continually wishing for peace, in an exaggerated, repetitive and flattering way. Por decirlo de otro modo, un ‘zalamero’ es la versión edulcorada de un ‘pelota’ o ‘lameculos‘. El origen etimológico del término lo encontramos en el árabe (como otros tantísimos vocablos que han enriquecido nuestra lengua y forman parte de ella) ‘salaam’ cuyo significado es ‘paz’ y que es ampliamente utilizado (entre otras cosas) como saludo, por ejemplo el famoso ‘salam aleikum’ (Que la paz esté contigo) con el que inician su saludo los musulmanes. De ahí pasó a ‘zalama’ (desear la paz) siendo utilizado con el sufijo –ero (zalamero) para llamar así a aquel que estaba continuamente deseando la paz, de manera exagerada, repetitiva y aduladora." ¿Verdad que es sumamente curioso e interesante?
