The village of Haid Al Jazil, Dawan Valley, Yemen. The village of Haid Al-Jazil is undoubtedly one of the most unique places in the world. An island in the middle of the Yemeni desert, a surreal landscape in Daw'an district in Hadhramaut Governorate. The village's mud-brick buildings are built on a giant rock overlooking the Wadi Dawan valley. There are no rivers or lakes in Yemen, the only source of water for people living far from the coast comes in the form of seasonal river valleys called wadis. For this reason, villages like Haid Al-Jazil are built on top of these valleys to exploit most of these temporary water sources. The houses of Haid Al-Jazil stand on a huge stone block 150 meters high and enjoy a 360-degree view over the Wadi Dawan valley, in the middle of the desert, on the Incense Route. These constructions are formed by adobes with wooden floors that separate the different floors. Although they may look like primitive huts, they are innovative, sophisticated and able to withstand the rainy seasons thanks to constant maintenance. The populations have developed techniques that make it possible to build houses with up to 11 floors. Dating back more than 500 years and once inhabited by just a few hundred people, the surreal village is now virtually abandoned due to years of heavy rain, erosion and lack of regular maintenance that have caused the ruin of around 70 percent of their houses
