After building Emirates Stadium Wenger's plan was to use revenue generated from the Champions League to pay up. He relied heavily on youths and bargains in the transfer market to build his team. It worked initially until Sheikh Mansour bought Man City and changed the landscape of English football forever. Before Man City's purchase, Abrahamovich's money spending Chelsea already dislodged Arsenal as the main rival to Man U in the EPL. Arsenal then were the third best team in the land. With Mansour's money Man City ravaged Arsenal, offering their players a lot more and taking at least five of Wenger's regulars to Manchester. Despite that Arsenal became the fourth best team in the land and were still making the Champions League. All that stopped when Liverpool's sleeping American owners woke from their slumber and invested wisely into the squad. Since then Arsenal has been away from the big picture. Barcelona are cash strapped and will suffer more without Champions League revenue. Luckily for them we've not seen investors queuing to buy La Liga clubs - they prefer to buy English ones. Barcelona will never go so low to the ridiculous level Arsenal are right now but if they don't sort out their financial issues on time the they may never get to the lofty heights they enjoyed with Guardiola and Enrique in years to come.
