I checked Whoscored.com a couple minutes ago just to update myself on the statistics side of things so far. While browsing through three categories piqued my interest: Possession, Pass Accuracy, Shots per Game. Manchester City is the only team featuring on all three categories, topping the Possession category (66.7%), coming second only to PSG in the Pass Accuracy category (89.9%) and third in the Shots per Game category (19.3). The second team on the Possession category is Barcelona with 64.6% average possession. They are fifth on the Pass Accuracy log with 88.2%. That begs the question as to why Barca are struggling despite controlling games. However, the Shots per Game category is telling. Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Man City, Inter and Real Madrid are the top 5 teams on this category. Tellingly, these teams are either in the first or second place in their league while Barca is nowhere close to the top. Shots lead to goals and goals win games. Possession play without reasonable attempt on goal is completely sterile and uninteresting to watch.
