A top analyst once said that if Guardiola was the one managing the crop of players at Man U right now they will be title favourites. His words truly hit home and left me asking myself a very simple question: What makes a top manager? What makes hugely successful managers like Pep, Mourinho, Klopp, Tuchel, Conte and the likes so successful? What is it that these people know that managers like Solksjær, Pirlo, Koeman, Roberto Martinez and to a lesser extent, Benitez doesn't? Guardiola plays tiki-taka but Van Gaal played it ahead of him. Klopp plays gegenpressing but David Wagner plays the same too. Yet Wagner couldn't save Huddersfield from relegation and he's currently training an unknown Young Boys Bern who only became popular after walloping another failing manager in Ole Gunnar Solksjær. Ole cut his managerial teeth while Ferguson was still at Old Trafford yet he couldn't save Cardiff from relegation and he's doing a much more terrible job than Van Gaal at the moment. What makes a top manager? The squad at their disposal? Their tactical discipline? Man management?
