KidDiary - My Walking Step at 5
Accident is an incident that is feared by everyone. As human beings, there comes a time unexpected things happens to us - good or bad. I have heard cases of accidents but never witnessed one. I never knew mine was that close. At the early phase of my life, ten years ago was the first time I had an accident. I was about five years of age. The accident happened so fast like a sought of film trick. It was a fatal foot injury, it made life unbearable for me. Due to the injury, walking was difficult and at some point, I had to learn how to walk like a baby. On a bright Sunday morning, everyone prepared to go to church. It happened that my father's car was on a repair and we had no choice than to mount a motorcycle that day. My father is someone that strictly adheres to time, it's not a thing of joke to him but my mother is vice-versa, either late or early - the way situations comes. So, my father said my brother and I should follow him to church but my mother said that my junior brother should go instead, that she would take me. By that statement, my father took only my brother with him and left me. Later, my mum and I mounted a motorcycle. Few minutes after mounting the motorcycle, the accident occurred. The smoke that came out from the motorcycle exhaust injured my foot brutally with blood gushing out like a river. This was because of the way I sat down on the motorcycle. The way I always sit on motorcycle at my tender age was that I would face the person sitting behind me instead of facing the motorcyclist and it had always been like that until that day. My shoe flew up immediately the accident occurred and my mother went to get the shoe, and on getting back, my foot was seriously bleeding. She wanted to be in the church early that day and so she did her things quickly **too** fast. But due to the accident, she went late; she left me in the hospital with her nurse friend to be treated. After church services was over, my family came to the hospital to see me. My father was most annoyed because he had earlier told my mother to allow me to follow him; my mother regretted her actions. After several days of being admitted in the hospital, I was discharged to go home but I couldn't walk. I was carried around or stayed in a place because of my condition. It came to the worst, I couldn't use the toilet anymore, I have to be carried to ease myself in a small container **-** *potty.* I was in great discomfort, I couldn't even go to school and funny enough, others were already through with their examinations. Then, after some weeks, I was carried to school to write my examinations - I still couldn't walk. It took about a month for me to recover. I was taught how to walk by my parent's every morning, that was the first thing I had to do whenever I woke up. I had a funny walking step because my injured foot could not stand firm on the ground - I had to walk on a feet and hop with the injured one. Anytime I even try putting it on the ground, I cried in pains. Days, weeks and months passed before I could fully walk on my own. The injury left a big scar on my right foot even till now. It left a scar not just on my foot but on my memory too because anytime I see the scar, it reminds me of the way I struggled in pains and my funny walking step at five years. The lesson to be learned is that always listen to the person who has more time to spare or save you a stress. Another one is that even if you move or do things quickly or slowly, you will always get to your destination. When it comes to life, we should be careful about it even if we have to be very slow like slug to reach our destinations. The accident was a bitter experience, I must say. This article was written by my little cousin. Her first attempt at writing. I didn't edit it on her request. She hopes to get feedbacks from me and anyone that read this. Your criticism, advice, and tips to help her get better would be appreciated. She will read the comments. So comment in good faith.

I am not sure if the advice helps, will help. In real life people are forced to hurry and accidents happen. Most accidents happen at home, not even when we are in a hurry. I can imagine it's hard to learn walking again although I think an injured foot should heal first before one stands on it. What kind of examinations a 5 year old has? What hurts me most in this story is that a parent cares more about going to church as comforting the own child. I can't help but even my violent abusive mother with a more than fulltime job didn't leave me behind in hospital.
I'm reluctant to make any comments on her first aritcle because writing should be encouraged and nourished when children are young. we should encourage her, and allow her an opportunity to write some more before we make comments. ask her how she felt about her writing, and how she felt during the writing process. ask her why she decided on that topic? a big part of learning to love writing is learning to enjoy the entire process, from beginning to end. if anything, i would simply say that her first attempt was good, and that she should write more.
