It belongs to the apocinaceae family and its scientific name "Nerium" is given by a marine deity called Nereus, famous in mythology for his daughters, the Nereids. The most toxic oleanders are thought to be those with red flowers. Its leaves are rich in saponin, a powerful toxin, capable of causing the death of goats and sheep.
