Know everything about the Pedraplén Caibarién with Cayo Santa María The Pedraplén that joins Caibarién with Cayo Santa María, located to the north of the province of Villa Clara, with a length of 48 kilometers, is considered the longest work of its kind in the world. The road communicates mainly with the keys Las Brujas, Ensenachos and Santa María. At the same time, it leads to the small islets of Cobos, Fragoso, Majá, Francés, Las Picúas and Español de Adentro. The Pedraplén Caibarién is a tourist attraction in itself This work was born with the aim of developing attractive tourist places for tourists in Cuba. It is a truly impressive piece of work. It is estimated that with the number of trips necessary to move the stones through 48 kilometers in the sea, it would be possible to go around the world through the Equator about 650 times. The equipment needed to carry out this work was about 68 dump trucks, front bulldozers, loaders, compressors, etc. This machinery was expected to increase, depending on demand, as they moved out of firing range. But the unfavorable economy of the island prevented it. A series of measures were taken so as not to interrupt its continuous construction. However, many obstacles occurred in meeting the planned time, originally 5 years, due to the drastic reduction in resources, particularly fuel. For this reason, its completion was not achieved until after 10 years. However, it was carried out in a net time of 7 years of continuous work. Long outages and other material factors caused a two-year delay. The total cost of the work was 34 million dollars. Engineering hand in hand with ecology The majestic work is made with the aim of preventing waves of two or more meters from exceeding the stones, such as those caused by hurricanes that hit the island frequently, with winds that reach more than 220 kilometers per hour. So that the flora and fauna of the area would not be affected, it was avoided to place the rocks in the mangroves. 44 bridges were built, reinforced in situ with concrete, combined with precast. The bridge over the Canal de los Barcos stands out, the largest in Cuba, with 350 meters long crossing the sea. From it you can see a spectacular landscape, even more so when there is the presence of fishing boats. With all its merits, the Pedraplén Cairabién to Cayo Santa María obtained the "Bridge of Alcántara International Award" in the VII Edition (1998-2000). This award has been established with the aim of recognizing and rewarding, within the Ibero-American sphere, the public work that has, in the jury's opinion, the greatest cultural, technological, aesthetic, functional and social importance. The technical and aesthetic quality and perfection during the execution of the project are highlighted. The difficult maintenance of a colossal work With the passage of Hurricane Irma in 2017, the immense waves managed to break two large sections of the Pedraplén de Caibarién to Cayo Santamaría, making it impossible to travel in that area to the tourist pole of the northeast keys of Villa Clara. Thanks to the intense work of the men from the Campaña de Las Villas contingent and the Empresa Constructora de Obras del Turismo, traffic was re-established with some limitations along the causeway. Thus began the reconstruction of the damage caused by Hurricane Irma in the area. The causeway was finally completely repaired, but the passage of other storms and the marine environment force constant maintenance work on the great work. In June 2020, repair work was carried out on some internal systems of the infrastructure. In particular, the hydraulic water supply system was repaired, through which water is supplied to more than half of the hotels in the Villa Clara keys.
