We all know how good a compliment is. Whether it is from a person we know or from a stranger, it helps boost our confidence, it makes our day great.

"That dress really suits you."

"You look pretty."

"I love your artwork."

These simple compliment gives us a tingling feeling in our body.

We know how it feels to be complimented but still, we are reluctant to compliment someone when we have the opportunity.

Why?

If we think about it, giving compliment is very easy, saying nice words to someone. But on the other hand, it can cause to some misinterpretation. Some people don't think the way we are. The act of complimenting someone may be interpret as being envy or jealous.

For example, your friend bought a new shoes and wear it when you have a get together. The shoes really suits her and of course you give compliment. It may seem okay with you but for some people who heard your compliment they might think different or even to the person receiving your compliment.

We always reluctant complimenting others especially strangers. With the same reason we are afraid to be misinterpret. But aside from being misinterpret, some researchers find reasons why we pulled ourselves in giving compliments. First reason is that due to social anxiety. Complimenting people we don't know well. We experience discomfort while making the compliment, and the person receiving the compliment may find it awkward and may also feel the discomfort we are feeling.

The second reason is that the concern over competence. Some of us are not good giving compliment or rarely give compliment. We may worry that our words that we wanted to say won't come out right and won't convey the intented meaning.

There are also some aspects were we feel to say kind words to others. We utter words of compliment based on the mood we are feeling. We also tend to observe the person who will receive the compliment. We always make sure that our mood and the receiver's mood are the same.

Just imagine giving compliment to a stranger who is a brokenhearted or feeling frustrated. Your compliment might be taken to something that may lead to an argument.

In conclusion, we should practice giving compliment. Even a simple compliment has an effect to someone regardless of who they are. Our emotions may be telling us sometimes that it is not good, but we know that there are times we overcome our emotions and do what we think is right.

A simple act of kindness always has an impact to someone. ~jabs
