Who doesn't love a calculator?
I love my calculator. It helps me add and subtract. It helps me multiply and divide. It aids me in my computation. Add what? Subtract what? Multiply what? Divide what?
First and foremost, the fundamental operations are said to be binary operations. The reason for that is you perform them on two(bi) things at a time. However long your expression could be, you still perform them binarily.
So applications of the things we learn in Math is their use in our day to day lives.
I know the basic concepts behind this operations but most of the time, I have to use paper and pencil to get them right. But because of my calculator, I have easier time.
The *five* reasons why I love my calculator are the following:
First, my calculator is a natural display. Meaning that, I can just input numbers as is as they are written in a formula. I just have to press the right keys on my calculator.
Second, it is powered by solar energy. I don't have to buy batteries. When it is low in battery, I simply use my flashlight to charge it. I direct light into a particular part in my calculator and it is charged! Amazing, right?
Third, my calculator is bought at a very high price! Just kidding haha. I actually bought this at a cheaper price than it's actual price. This is the product of my sister being scammed by retailers. I do not know anymore the story but she bought this thing at over $20. And I just bought it from her for less than $10. Well, it may be second hand but it is like brand new.
Fourth, my calculator, has integral calculus functions. If you are an engineering student or anybody who took up integral calculus, my calculator is able to calculate definite integrals. Okay, many calculators are able to do that. And so? I am just relating to you why I love my calculator.
Fifth, which is last but not the least, my calculator is awesome! Just that. Whoever invented this things, I'm grateful to you. I am just being grateful okay? How many of you are grateful from the small things we receive everyday? If you are not, then start appreciating things from the smallest till the biggest. If even you can't appreciate your greatest blessing, then you won't be able to appreciate the small things. So always start from the least and we will be more appreciative.
Whenever I tutor young kids, I don't immediately recommend a calculator to them. I advise them first to understand basic principles in mathematics. The basic principles of course include how to perform the operations. Or I even start with the types of numbers. Sometimes, it's sad that teenagers who know how to make boyfriend/girlfriend do not know what an integer is.
Once you know the foundations behind Mathematical operations, then you will be able to enjoy your calculator like I do. There are many students who are still unable to use the calculator for reason that they just don't know how to.
A sample wrong way of adding/subtracting
In the above picture, the correct answer for the given expression to be simplified is zero (0). But the answer of the student is -6. This will lead them to question why even by use of calculator for a simple arithmetic, they get it wrong. The only way to do it is to take the principles into heart. For this one, you should always do it from left to right. Or you may just change the given into all addition as, 2 + (-5) + 3, then proceed to rules for addition. Once you get the hang of it, you don't have to really do the principles one step at a time for as long as you do things logically.
To start using calculators in the right manner, you should first start understanding the basic principles.
After all, we can't ask "Who doesn't love a calculator" just because others struggle even to use it.
Keep learning dear students. I am a student by the way. We always should be.

Cassava Tops: Our vegetable for the week
Have you seen this plant? This plant is called cassava. It's root crops and leaves could be eaten. This week, cassava tops has been our main vegetable item. Therefore, I say that is our vegetable for the week.
To be exact, I started picking leaves last week Thursday. Then I did it again the next day, and the day after that. Until yesterday afternoon.
Our immediate neighbors transferred to another home. The new boarders are always out. One time, I asked permission if I could get the cassava tops. The lady of the house gave permission saying that they do not eat that anyway. Or are not fond of them just yet.
In the afternoon I would get the cassava tops. I wait then for my husband to come home. He is the one who cooks the tops.
Ever since I got married to my man, I always relied on his cooking. I think this is one of the best things I got out of this marriage.
His way of cooking these cassava tops is simple yet very edible and delicious. Although this viand is not one whom kids would readily appreciate, adults would come to love them once they taste them. Like us!
One good thing about cassava is that they grow even by just planting the wood cuttings on the ground. And even when they grow and you pluck half the shrub, it would sprout new leaves in no time as long as there is regular rain showers.
Even when it is the only viand prepared, I would still have a good meal. We usually have meat or fish for the kids but we want them to see that vegetables are very healthy.
When I researched, I found out we could even put coconut milk on it.
Cassava is more known for its root crops. Fortunately, we were able as well to learn that we could eat the leaves.
This is a big help actually for our budget because vegetables nowadays are very pricy.
If I am not mistaken, I first tasted this at my elder sister's before. They also grow these plants on their backyard so they could easily get some. I usually eat camote tops or chayote tops but I realized I have additional 'free' vegetables which is the cassava tops.
We are so much blessed with these vines and shrubs in our area that ignoring them is equivalent to ignoring His blessings. We are actually fortunate to have these. I can't imagine my food now without such vegetables.
I remember before when we are still renting. When we do not have something, I would go to places just to obtain chayote tops. Now we could readily pluck leaves of cassava as replacement for camote or chayote.
To summarize here are how cassava tops helped our economic and health aspects as a family:
It served as a quick harvest whenever we don't have available vegetable.
It helped with our budget.
Cassava is known to contain vitamins and minerals so this is helpful with our health. We just have to cook them properly to avoid the toxic content of the plant.
My hubby and I both love the leaves so it is a good food to eat together with him.
Another thing I love about cassava leaves is that, it could serve as a fencing material. It easily grows as a shrub and I could use it both for fencing and for food. Wonderful!
Personally, I have experienced an improvement with my sleep ever since I kept eating this food. I believe this could be used as a staple food.
In addition, after some time, you could also harvest the root crops. Same with the leaves, you have to cook this properly to get rid of toxic materials.
Final Thoughts
If I were one who has a backyard and has ideal location for growing these plants, I would have this. It gives economic and health benefits by providing vegetable for the family, improving sleep, and could be used as ornamental plant in the backyard.

Like in this article, I have given my thoughts about eating cassava leaves. These are true stories from day to day living. For my next articles I will try to cover other topics relevant to our lifestyle and habits.*
