Sylhet District

According to Hindu scriptures, the severed hand (hand) of Sati Devi, the wife of Shiva, fell in this area, which is why the Hindu community believes that the name Srihatta is derived from 'Sri Hast'. The region is referred to as "Siriot" in the Aryan writings of the fourth century BC. Also, in the second century AD, the region is named "Sirte" in the description of the aliens, and in the Periplus of the Erythrian Sea. Then in 640 AD when the Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang visited this region. In his travelogue, he mentions the name of the region as "Silichatal". When the Turkish general Ikhtiyar Uddin Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khalji started the Muslim society in the country with the conquest of Bengal, the Muslim rulers wrote the name "Sylhet" instead of "Shrihat" in their documents. Match. Historians believe that the name Sylhet once became famous after its transformation from Shrihat. It is also said that at one time a rich man had a daughter in Sylhet district. His name was Shila. The man built a hat in memory of his daughter and named it Shilar Hat. The name Sylhet is derived from the name of this rock hat in many ways. On August 1, 1995, Sylhet became the sixth division of the country.
