Burial ceremony among the Yorubas The Yorubas believe that when one dies you go to heaven,it's either paradise or Hellfire. Elders of the yoruba land once said "It is better to die young and leave on earth a child that can inherit all that the person has labored for than to die young and have no child" this proverb explain the great concern they show to the burying of their corpses. We have two types of dead as the Yoruba classify them: A young dead, and An adult dead. the death of the young ones are actually cried about and there is no ceremony since it's an untimely death There are some steps to be followed when burying an adult deceased .They are as follows: Making announcement of a deceased death . The manner of announcement of the King's death differs from others death. After telling others,they dig the ground 6ft deep for the corpse. Back in the days of our forefathers corpse are buried mostly in the living room alongsides with expensive cloths ,cowries ,fruits,cutlass believing that those items would be helpful in the afterlife. In the modern time the deads are buried with casket. 3. Few soil are kept aside from the digging for making oath incase of any betrayal. 4. The corpse is then cared for by bathing,cutting of finger and toenails and barbing of hairs for males and plaiting for females . The pattern of burying corpses in Yoruba land is based on the type of dead and mode of death. Few include : A person that dies in water is buried at river bed. A person that dies with pregnancy are buried coupled with sacrifice. An hunched back is buried in a big clay pot ,in a deep forests with lots of rituals A person with leprosy is buried by an authentic herbalist and their properties must be burnt. After the burying of the corpses celebrations are done foe 7days for the corpse to finally have peace in their eternal life.
