A day in the everyday life So, I’m sitting here thinking about something interesting to write about. I’m not just sitting though, to be exact, I’m in the dining room, sitting listening to Dido's White Flag on repeat while my Mom watches TV in the den. I’m sure you know the song White Flag, yeah? By Dido?? You know, the one that goes like this... “I know you think that I shouldn’t still love you, or tell you that. But if I didn’t say it, well, I’d still have felt it; where’s the sense in that? I promise I’m not trying to make your life harder or return to where we were. I will go down with this ship and I won’t put my hands up and surrender. There will be no white flag above my door, I’m in love and always will be…” Yeah, that’s the one! Anyways that’s where I am at the moment. I’m starting outside the window right now and I mean, I could write about the weather today, the same as yesterday and the day before. Over here it’s rainy season so it’s as though it’s been raining nonstop since the beginning of the month. Personally, I love the rainy season only when I’m indoors. The situation right now isn’t ideal for those who have to leave the house you know cause of the roads, floods, traffic and all that nastiness. I’m so glad I don’t have to deal with all that. Perhaps, it’s not the best idea just to write about the weather. I could try my hands on some other topic. The thing is, I’ve got my hands on a bunch of other topics to write about. Like a lot. Something like; okay, you see I’ve got some sayings stuck in my mind and maybe writing about them wouldn’t be the worst idea but the “koko of the oro” that’s how we say “important thing” or “truth of the matter” or something of high note, serious or important in that regard. As I mentioned, the koko of the oro is which one of those sayings lingering in my mind could I write about. One is, “***Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.”*** By *Albert Einstein.* Another is, “***You have to really believe not only in yourself, you have to believe the world is worth your sacrifices***.” By *Zaha Hadid.* I have more but those two are the only ones I’m truly considering writing about and if I am to pick one, it’ll be the former. I think it resonates with me more than the other because it’s one of those sayings you hear your parents keep on reiterating growing up, kind of like a recitation especially when you do something they consider frivolous. Sort of like an anthem probably not in the same words and definitely in the native language. I think most Nigerian parents have their own version of that saying that they tell their kids. So, my understanding from the given quote is that- all those things which we can count (things that can be counted- say, money) isn’t always crucial in life (not always count). Furthermore, the things which really do matter, the things that count are those which can’t always be measured. Here, we can infer the word counts as something which holds significance and we can bank on in difficult times- like, family, friends, emotions, a little act by some acquaintance, anything. The understanding of the phrase ‘things that can be counted’ is more related to money or material things. The same goes for many of us in our lives. The adolescents of present times are busy running behind the superfluity of life- money, home, car, comfort, etc. Necessarily for a better life, these things are essential to an extent. But forfeiting one for the other, especially dereliction of your parents, and responsibilities, for the material fulfilment of life, isn’t a reasonable decision. Conclusion Money is important but never chase it at the detriment of other important things. Learn to build good relationships and connections with others. That was my perfect explanation to the first quote by Albert too and that is just the truth. In the quest of making money, we should never forget the place of our family and friends. They are important too.
Yes, def agreed!! Others do bad things just for money, and they regret it, because what is money when you are not happy? Right!
Yay. I love that. Indeed the world deserves our utmost best. Oftentimes, I tend to do things mediocrely.
I certainly agree. Not everything that can be counted, counts. Like spending a time and building memories with different people, it really counts in your life and it is something money cannot buy.
This is for me, I've locked up myself with my phone since the beginning of this month to hunt for money. I think I should loosen up🤦
It's rare to see someone that listens to Dido, I have a couple of her songs on my phone and that white flag is one of my favorites 😁 I don't know if it's just me but I am slowly getting tired of the constant rains, the cold that comes with it is beginning to make me feel uneasy. I was just talking with a friend earlier today that those of them that go out to work everyday are really trying, I am always at home but the rain is still being a nuisance
