Life Over Death - BCH donations used to deliver care packages to Toronto's homeless We are living in times of fear and uncertainty. Many, myself included, have been hyper-focused on the death, destruction and misery that seems to be spreading all over the world. Rising case numbers, fatalities, increased restrictions on our ways of life, economic uncertainty; it's hard to see a light at the end of that tunnel. Yet we need not only be concerned with the negatives. During times of difficulty, the human spirit has a remarkable ability to overcome, to rise above, to go through the difficulties, becoming more resilient than ever. Dark Times for Toronto's Homeless With many of Toronto's shelters closing or severely restricting their client base, over 5,000 homeless men, women and youth are left without essential supports such as bedding, food, clothing, and shower facilities. To make matters worse, all restaurants in Ontario are either closed, or only open for take-out. Now I have nowhere I can shower, save for paying for a motel room every single night." With more people practicing social distancing and staying at home, handouts to those living on the streets have become a rarity. I spoke to a number of individuals who hadn't eaten in days. With a total collapse of the pre-existing suppourt network, these individuals have been left to fend for themselves, in a world of increasingly shrinking opportunities. Our Response Coins 4 Clothes' mission has always been to provide clothing to those who are unable to access this basic necessity. As the charity evolved, we added on-boarding new users to Bitcoin Cash as an equally important goal. Users would donate gently used clothing to pre-approved charities in their city, and earn some Bitcoin Cash for their donations. Given the current Covid-19 situation, many charities in Canada have stopped accepting and distributing gently used clothing. And considering the immediate demand for relief for those living on the streets, we decided it was time to act. On March 25th, we announced that all BCH donations would be used to suppourt people on the streets. https://twitter.com/Coins4Clothes/status/1242990708535017472?s=20 The Plan I didn't want to wait around for Amazon orders to arrive (using purse.io and paying with BCH), in fact I was able to find many of the items for a lower price at Walmart. https://www.purse.io I bought bread, peanut butter, strawberry jam, toothbrushes, toothpaste, water bottles and the highly prized necessity among those living on the streets: fresh socks. I paid with Fiat, after transferring the BCH to my own personal wallet. No one new on-boarded, sure. But at least the funds were being put to use to help those in need. We got busy making PBJ sandwiches. I got in touch with my buddy Sam, to let him know we were doing something for homeless folks, and for him to let folks know where to show up. We decided we would meet at a pre-arranged time in Mississauga (a suburb close to Toronto), and distribute food, clothing and supplies to those in need. Sam got in touch with contacts and let as many of them know to come by. "How are you going to get in touch with them?" I asked. "A phone is one of the most important things for a homeless person. Just because we're homeless doesn't mean we don't have access to a phone". Saturday came around, and we ended up seeing 6 or so individuals. Not everyone needed everything we were offering. "I just need socks man, and water. I have food for the next couple of days so I'm good" "I don't need anything brother. I may be homeless but I have a job. See- I even have money on me and in the bank" Stephan pulled out $30 from his wallet. "I just can't afford a place. I don't do drugs, I work and I still can't afford a place." "Save that stuff for someone who needs it". Stephan eventually came around and admitted he could use a new pair of socks, and a PBJ sandwich didn't sound too bad. All the while, we were sure to respect the health and dignity of everyone involved. We maintained a reasonable distance from each other, without treating each other like lepers. A few minutes later, everyone was on their way with their goodies. We packed up and headed to downtown Toronto. It was time to distribute some care packages to people directly on the streets. We pulled over and prepared a few packages. We figured we'd prepare more if we needed to. I had no idea what to expect. I had heard that most of the homeless folks in Toronto were living out-of-sight. Hiding in public forests and parks, staircases, and abandoned buildings. We did manage to find a number of individuals who were homeless or economically destitute. We would pull over, hand the package over, smile and be on our way. The response we got was incredible. "Thank for doing this man - I've been eating nothing but bread for the last few days" said one gentleman. In total we gave out over 20 care packages in Toronto, and about 6 in Mississauga. We will be returning this weekend for round 2. On Social Responsibility There are some who have asked me if what we are doing is socially responsible. To that I answer that for people living on the street, they are living closer to life and death than ever before. While many experts warn to keep contact to a minimum, there are simply not enough services being provided to this population for them to be left to their own devices. They need our help now more than ever. We wear gloves, we keep our distance, and we keep smiling. Our motto has become "Life over Death". We can conquer fear and apathy without being reckless or putting others at risk. But I heard the cities in and around Toronto are offering motel rooms for the homeless to quarantine in. Is it true? Before publishing this article, I had a phone call with Jay-R (pseudonym) , a homeless man who has been in government sponsored quarantine for the past 5 days. He had been sleeping outside and had a cough, runny nose, and felt sick to his stomach. He went to the hospital and was prescribed antibiotics. A day later he started feeling worse, he called his outreach worker, and was sent for an assessment with a paramedic. "Basically you go to or call the shelter first, they call paramedics for you, you are tested and if you meet criteria are quarantined for 14 days. You can't leave for a full 14 days." Jay-R said he hadn't gotten a diagnosis yet. "You get 3 meals a day, but you can't go outside at all. If you leave the cops will be called to collect you". Jay-R said that those in quarantine *can* go outside for supervised fresh air, so long as they don't leave the property. He said he often feels the urge to go outside, to take walks around the property, but he can't. "I'd rather be in a shelter because at least there I can go outside". Despite this he insists that it isn't that bad. "I doubt I'll go psycho in here. It's just fourteen days. And honestly you can't take stuff for granted you know. At least I have 3 meals here and I'm inside." "Still, a bunch of guys I know didn't want to go in there" Jay-R said. "They don't want to be holed up for fourteen days, they don't want to take orders. Some guys compare it to jail". When I asked Jay-R what steps are taken for those who are addicted and want to be quarantined he responded "I'm not sure. I'm not hooked on anything, so it wouldn't effect me. I'm not sure how they treat guys with addictions or drinking problems. I know a guy who smokes cigarettes every 10 minutes, and he's really struggling. They don't want you going out of your room without permission." Jay-R said the same gentlemen warned him "Once you're in here for a week, it gets harder. You run out of things to do or people to talk to." When I asked how many people were at the motel, Jay-R replied "We don't see each other, or know who else is staying in the rooms. There's really no way to know [how many people are in there]." When I asked him if someone could get in by pretending to have symptoms he insisted "that's why they get the paramedic to check you. You can't go in the shelter if you're sick, so they send you here. But if you're not sick, you still might not get into the shelter. They only have so many spots and they had to cut them down 'cuz of the virus". Where do we go from here? We are planning on feeding and clothing 40+ people this weekend. All donated clothes will be brand new (socks, and t-shirts) and the food will be made with love. Since our meet-up was cancelled, we will be handing these t-shirts out to build our street level #BCHGANG. Thank you to Bitcoin.com for the donation. Recap of January Toronto BCH meetup Last month, twenty people from the Greater Toronto Area descended upon the VirgoCX headquarters, where the Toronto BCH meet-up was taking place. https://www.virgocx.ca This was our first time hosting our meetup in a 'corporate' or 'office environment', which actually worked out nicely given the focus on presentations this time around. **Summary of the night:** Attendees were greeted and received some free Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and Bitcoin Cash Toronto (BCT) SLP tokens for attending (see a video by clicking here) https://twitter.com/Coins4Clothes/status/1225060517124956161?s=20 We sold swag for BCH and BCT tokens. I'm ready to set a discount: The final step was to set my discount, and then pay with Bitcoin Cash by scanning a QR code with my mobile wallet. And given the current gaming of the BCH DAA (Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm) by large mining pools, a block had not be found in over 2 hours. It was an awkward exchange between myself and a brand new attendee. Luckily he was very understanding and shared his SLP address with me so I could send him the funds once the block cleared. This highlights the need for developers, miners, and interested businesses to co-operate in order to solve this tx-limit. What it really boils down to is the need to fund developers to work on this problem, which has become a point of contention in the BCH space. I for one am looking forward to projects like flipstarter.cash (headed by im_uname) to address the funding problem. https://read.cash/@im_uname **In the meantime, if you plan on making many consecutive transactions, I encourage you to split your funds/tokens between two or more wallets a few hours before you need to spend them. Recap of Toronto BCH December Meet-up The Toronto December BCH meet-up has come and gone, and I'll like to take a moment to recap all the exciting things that happened that night. A dozen or so people braved the winter storm and came out, despite more than 25 RSVPing. To thank them for their commitment, we offered them double the BCT token rewards for attending. We handed out 140 BCT tokens to 7 attendees who had the badger wallet installed. Some attendees opted to ‘donate’ their share of tokens by not receiving any. https://badger.bitcoin.com/ Five people spent their BCT tokens (1 spent some on swag , the other 4 spent it some on raffle entry tickets). In Summary I was so busy handing out tokens, receiving tokens for payment, selling swag, and running the raffle that I didn’t have much time to take pictures or videos. I would say the engagement at this meet-up (using BCH/SLP tokens) was close to 100%. Pretty much everyone either participated in the raffle, received or spent some BCT tokens or spent or received some BCH. In terms of networking, I was happy to see people exchanging business cards and engaging in discussion. A Case for paying meet-up attendees BCH dividends As co-organizer of the Toronto Bitcoin Cash Meet-Up , I was trying to come up with ways to encourage more participation in our recently resurrected meet up. https://www.meetup.com/BitcoinCashToronto/ Right around this time, SLP tokens were getting a lot of attention thanks to the bitcoin.com dividend tool, which allowed anyone to pay BCH dividends to holders of a particular SLP token. https://simpleledger.cash/ https://tools.bitcoin.com/slp-dividend-calculator/ I thought, why not create an SLP attendance token for our meet-up, and reward token holders with BCH proportional to their attendance? The next logical question was "how will our meet up generate BCH"? If we were to distribute dividends, we needed revenue. Thankfully there was a very simple solution : Bitcoin.com was sponsoring meet-ups with swag like stickers, pins and t-shirts. We could sell this swag for BCH and then re-distribute it to token holders. https://www.bitcoin.com And so I created the Bitcoin Cash Toronto (BCT) Token. Each attendee would receive 10 tokens for every meet up they attended. I was surprised by how many people walked in the door not knowing anything about BCH, but still had their badger wallet in had ready to receive the tokens. Attendees could spend their BCT tokens on some swag, or pay directly with BCH. Attendees were also able to enter a draw to **win** some swag, again paying with either BCH or BCT SLP tokens to enter the raffle. ALL BCT tokens spent on swag, along with any extra un-redeemed tokens would be later burned using the Electron Cash SLP edition wallet which minted them. This was to ensure that every attendee would really earn their fair share, be it through the upcoming dividend pay-out, swag received for the tokens, or a combination of both. https://simpleledger.cash/project/electron-cash-slp-edition/ We had earned just over $12 selling swag for BCH and paid this out to the 9 token holders of the night. https://explorer.bitcoin.com/bch/tx/fb6e95c92268b9befbc5d10de45f49a77b0fcedc499936aa751543a79154e706 An Incentive System That Drives Adoption Rewarding attendees with SLP tokens is a great way to increase adoption. The benefits of utilizing these are many: Attendees have a financial incentive to attend the meet up, by the possibility of winning a raffle, earning BCH dividends through the SLP tokens, or spending the SLP tokens on swag. Attendees are on-boarded on the spot, introduced to both BCH and SLP tokens, and get an opportunity to use either one that same night. Attendees get to learn about dividends, and then experience their magic the following day when the payments are sent out. The meet-up co-organizers have the same financial incentives for attending, since they also earn 10 tokens for attending. Working Out The Details The first test-run was certainly a success, but there were a few lessons learned along the way: One guy brought 3 friends and earned 40 tokens for all four of them. For the sake of increasing adoption, future attendees will not be allowed to collect tokens on behalf of their less interested friends. Those who wanted to spend BCT tokens on swag needed some dust to process the transactions, since SLP transactions require some BCH to process. We easily solved this by giving a few pennies worth of BCH to the attendees while on boarding them with the SLP tokens (This problem might already be solved thanks to Vin Armani's SLP post office system) https://medium.com/@vinarmani/simple-ledger-postage-protocol-enabling-a-true-slp-token-ecosystem-on-bitcoin-cash-f960a58c16c4 We sold more swag with the SLP tokens than we did with BCH. While this was great for getting people to spend their tokens as cash, we might have earned more BCH if we priced the tokens a little less aggressively. On the other hand, more tokens spent mean less in circulation, which means each dividend holder gets proportionally more BCH that way. I imagine it will take some fine tuning to get this just right. Future Directions Although selling swag from Bitcoin.com was a great way to get people to use, earn and spend SLP tokens and BCH, I'm hesitant to rely on only one method of funding our meet up. What happens if Bitcoin.com stops sending free swag, or if we sell our current stock and are waiting for another shipment? https://www.bitcoin.com For a system to be robust, it can't have a single point of failure. I've thought of a few ways meet up organizers can still earn BCH for their meet up outside of selling Bitcoin.com swag: Other ways Meetups can Earn BCH Charge local vendors/artisans a small fee to sell their goods at your meet-up. Be sure to clear this with the venue to ensure they are okay with it. The vendors can accept what ever form of currency they want, but make sure they also accept BCH. Recruit sponsors. At our upcoming December 1st meet up, a local Canadian exchange (virgocx) will be sponsoring a $50 "Guess the BCH price on our exchange" BCH raffle.
