Health Why do Nigerians mostly believe that mental disorders are spiritual problems or spiritual curses?? Most people give upon mental disorders because they believe they are spiritual curses and have no medical cure. . .Once their family or friends are affected they just give up on them because of this belief. Mental and psychological disorders are MEDICAL conditions which results from the way people think, reason, feel or behave. Any one can develop mental disorder and it cuts across children and adults. They are basically 2 groups; neurosis and psychosis type. The neurosis typeincludes anxiety, phobia, sleep disorders, mild depression, somatization etc while the psychosis group include severe depression, schizophrenia, traumaticstress disorders, delusional disorders. . . These conditions can be well managed by psychiatrists with the help of good drugs. . . .They are NOT spiritual and people can and do get well when properly treated.
