Why Do We Celebrate Christmas?

Many people have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas, but it is still celebrated in most of the world. I was watching an interview and a man in the UK was asked "Do people celebrate Christmas in Nigeria?" and his response was "Yeah, they do but they only use it as an avenue to party. They don't really celebrate Christmas like what christmas is meant to be and they don't understand what christmas is all about" I felt offended by this response because you haven't been to my country and you haven't seen us celebrate so what will you know about how we celebrate christmas? The truth is, I have been eating rice all year but the rice on Christmas day always taste different and smells different. You will feel the joy in the air and almost taste the christmas itself. This festive holiday is marked by twinkling lights, decorated trees, and joyful gatherings with family and friends. But what is the true reason for this celebration? At its heart, Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. According to Christian belief, Jesus was born in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago to bring hope, love, and salvation to humanity. The story of his birth, found in the Bible, tells of Mary and Joseph, who, unable to find room at an inn, took shelter in a stable where Jesus was born. Angels proclaimed his birth to shepherds, and wise men traveled from afar, guided by a star, to honor the newborn with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. For Christians, Jesus’s birth represents God’s gift to the world—an act of love and redemption. The name "Christmas" itself comes from "Christ’s Mass," a reference to the special church services held to honor Jesus’s birth. Beyond the religious significance, Christmas has also come to symbolize values such as kindness, generosity, and togetherness. Traditions like exchanging gifts, sharing meals, and helping those in need reflect the spirit of giving and compassion that the holiday promotes. Even for those who do not observe it as a religious event, Christmas serves as a time to connect with loved ones, reflect on the past year, and spread joy and goodwill. So, whether you celebrate Christmas by attending a midnight church service, decorating a tree, or giving to others, the essence of the holiday remains the same: a celebration of hope, love, and light in the darkest days of winter.
