On the evening before St. Nicholas Day, the children clean their shoes (the only time of the year) and put them by the door. St. Nicholas then comes at night and fills the boots with small presents, fruit or chocolate. If you live alone, however, he doesn't come. Last year, my son and I cleaned our shoes and left him some biscuits and a beer. There was no milk left. He was very pleased and the beer tasted good to me... sorry, him, too.

I didn't know they celebrated that in Germany too.
Sure, no child waits for 24 days... But I also wonder where else it's celebrated that way.
In The Netherlands we celebrate his birthday (which is actually the day he died) on the 5th of december. Kids often get a few presents just like Christmas in other countries. A few days before they can leave their shoe next to the fireplace to get some candy in the morning. Often the traditional "pepernoten".
Ok, it's different from our tradition but I think the roots are the same, just like the socks at the fireplace.
