It’s nice to know that someone is watching out for you, all the time. This is especially true when we get off the right path and stray from where we should be. Even more than that, for me it also points out that, like comparing a Shepard to sheep, the Shepard had an infinitely greater source of knowledge. Just like the sheep, we have few will, but our perspective is very limited. However, the Lord knows all and plays the game of life with the long term view. This is something that humans just don’t have. Maybe it’s our greatest flaw…even though we know we don’t know everything, we convince ourselves that we do. And that’s how many people lead their life. We need the Good Shepard!
