I just watched Detective Pikachu for the first time. It's a good movie, but for me it failed because I feel I 100% succeeded in hearing the main characters' entire stories. They won, yay, and now I don't need to know any more about them. That's the wrong way to write a story, IMHO. A good story is always just a slice of a larger story. The larger story doesn't have to be in-your-face, but it establishes that these characters have interesting lives outside the relationships built within the smaller, targeted story. In Detective Pikachu, I felt like the targeted story of Tim and his father was all there was. They should have given Tim more dimension. And they should have left Harry as a pikachu. :P
