Bitcoin’s price recovered quickly from Monday’s small market sell-off, approaching a new resistant level at $24,000 Tuesday. Traders and analysts said it is because demand has continued to rise despite minor negative market movement.
Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $23,433.85 as of 21:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Gaining 2.64% over the previous 24 hours.
Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $22,384.13-$23,629.40 (CoinDesk 20)
BTC above its 10-hour and 50-hour averages on the hourly chart, a bullish signal for market technicians.
*“The bitcoin market is highly levered at the time and volatility spiked sharply with the $20,000 break,” said macro cryptocurrency analyst Alex Kruger. A “$1,000 move (~5%) under current circumstances is rather ordinary. Expect such price action to continue until leverage and [trading] volumes come down.”*
*“European and American institutions are bullish, Asian retail investors are bearish,” Simons Chen, executive director of investment and trading at Hong Kong-based crypto lender Babel Finance, told CoinDesk. “Therefore, prices have remained volatile recently. But as traditional institutions continue to enter the market, a new price rally is only a matter of time.”*
Ether follow’s bitcoin’s positive trend
Ether “looks to simply be riding the coattails of bitcoin,” Vishal Shah, an options trader and founder of derivatives exchange Alpha5, said. “All said, the ether/bitcoin cross continues to grind in favor of bitcoin, and there’s limited reason to see that derail. Ether could continue to underperform.”

The US Securities and Exchange Commission today filed a lawsuit against Ripple Labs, the company that created XRP, as well as co-founder Christian Larsen and incumbent CEO Brad Garlinghouse.
The lawsuit, filed today in a Manhattan court, alleges that Ripple has raised $1.3 billion in unregistered securities offerings since 2013.
*"The defendants failed to register their offers and sales of XRP or satisfy any exemption from registration, in violation of the registration provisions of the federal securities laws,"* the SEC said in a press release.
The SEC further alleges that Ripple's periodic sale of the 48.2 billion XRP it holds in an escrow account constitutes the sale of an unregistered security. Ripple says that it sells this XRP to *"increase XRP liquidity and strengthen the overall health of XRP markets."*

The number of active Bitcoin addresses has shot up by over 105% this year, according to Coin Metrics’ data.
In its latest ‘State of the Network’ report, released today, the crypto data site said that the number of active addresses this year doubled to hit 1.2 million.

The company will soon launch a card in the US.
Crypto-payments platform Wirex is now a principal member of Visa, granting the firm the power to issue Visa accounts and process transactions ahead of its US launch. Wirex is the second crypto-native company after Coinbase to get such a membership.
London-based Wirex allows users to transfer crypto and traditional currencies around the globe.
Wirex launched a Visa card in 2015, which allows users to pay with crypto by automatically converting it into fiat currencies in millions of locations across 130 countries where Visa is accepted.
Its new Visa membership gives it more autonomy: Wirex can now issue accounts by itself, process transactions and provide processing services.
Wirex also has a cashback program, Cryptoback, which rewards users when they hold the Wirex native token, WXT.

As the year that felt like a decade on speed starts to draw to a welcome close, some of us are starting to try to make sense of the timeline of narratives and events. Most of us (myself included) are failing. And that in itself is an intriguing narrative, that sheds light on bitcoin’s rally.
Bear with me while I try to explain.
On the one hand, we have a rapid rise in the bitcoin price, and coalescing institutional support from traditional investors and companies that see potential in crypto assets and markets.
The deflation debate
First, let’s look at another pair of conflicting economic trends.
Most economists seem to believe that a resurgence of inflation is unlikely. Depressed consumption and excess supply, the continuing impact of technology and demographic shifts, the low velocity of money and the weak labor market are just some of the factors they point to. These have already led to deflation in some key economic areas.
An inflation hedge
But does that really matter for bitcoin?
Bitcoin is seen as an inflation hedge mainly because of its limited supply, which is not influenced by its price, and because of its relative attractiveness when real yields head to zero or lower.
A dollar debasement hedge
Bitcoin is also a hedge against a more gentle but just as pernicious debasement of currency through a loss of trust.
Traditionally, inflation moves in tandem with the strength of the local economy. But it can be triggered by currency weakness, which raises the prices of imported goods.

A hacked database of over a million Ledger customer emails has been made available on hacker site Raidforums.
The data was stolen during a June 2020 hack of the hardware wallet manufacturer's e-commerce database.
No financial information, recovery phrases, or keys were exposed in the attack.
More than a million customer emails that were apparently stolen from hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger were made publicly available on a hacker site today. Ledger said it was still confirming the details of the incident but admitted that the data “indeed could be the contents of our e-commerce database from June, 2020.”
The leaked data, which was published on Raidforums, also includes names, physical addresses and phone numbers of Ledger customers, and appears to originate from a hack of Ledger's e-commerce database in June.
According to cybersecurity site haveibeenpwned.com, it had already listed 69% of the addresses in the dumped database as having been compromised, from the time of the original hack.
What information was leaked?
**The original hack targeted Ledger's marketing and e-commerce database, meaning that only contact and order details were involved**; no financial information, recovery phrases, or keys were exposed in the attack. In 9,500 cases, phone numbers, postal addresses and details of product purchases were exposed in the hack.

MicroStrategy bought hundreds of millions in Bitcoin—$500 million since August, and plans to buy another $650 million more with investors' money.
Since Saylor invested, Bitcoin has more than doubled in price; yesterday, it hit a new all-time high of $24,000. Many attribute the bull run to investments from large institutions, such as MicroStrategy.
Saylor told Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, that he is "happy to share my playbook with you offline—from one rocket scientist for another." Send him a message, Musk, and he'll open like a clam.
In a huff, Musk said that "Bitcoin is almost as bs as fiat money" before proclaiming the One True Coin: Dogecoin. Musk, whose Twitter profile cites him as "Former CEO of Dogecoin," pumped the price of the meme coin after he tweeted about it six hours ago.

Bitcoin cut through $24,000 Saturday afternoon, setting a new record high as the leading cryptocurrency’s ongoing rally continues through the weekend before Christmas.
The price of the leading cryptocurrency continued its recent torrid run, setting a new all-time high of $24,122.67 before falling back to $23,978.86, up 5.49% on the day.
The record price comes two days after bitcoin (BTC, +2.35%) first sliced through the $23,000 price point amid its more than 12% intraday gains.
With the latest price increase, bitcoin's year-to-date percentage gains have grown to over 225%.

The U.S. Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network has proposed new rules for regulating non-custodial crypto wallets.
If implemented, institutions would have to identify anyone using an unhosted wallet to transact over $3,000.
Transactions over $10,000, from these wallets, would have to be reported directly to FinCEN.
The U.S. Treasury yesterday proposed a regulation that would require banks and crypto exchanges to confirm the identity of the owners of non-custodial cryptocurrency wallets to whom its customers send crypto.
According to the proposal, put forward by the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, banks and other financial institutions that exchange or issue money must “submit reports, keep records, and verify the identity of [some] customers” who send cryptocurrency into private wallets. These institutions would have to verify and record the names and physical addresses of wallet holders who receive $3,000 in crypto, and report those details to FinCEN when a customer sends over $10,000.

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) surpassed $24,000 on Dec. 19, reaching a new all-time high. On Coinbase, BTC peaked at $24,200 and has since consolidated into the $23,500 to $23,800 range.
Three factors pushed the price of BTC upwards within a short period, leading it to a record-high. The factors are a large short squeeze, stacked sell orders at $23,600, and the market’s reaction to the U.S. Treasury’s self-custodied wallet rule proposal.
A massive short squeeze occurs again at $23,600
According to data from Bybt.com, $138 million worth of short contracts were liquidated today.
The mass liquidation of short contracts occurred just as Bitcoin surpassed $23,600. The $23,600 area was a key resistance level because of stacked sell orders across major exchanges.
Jake Chervinsky, a general counsel at Compound Finance, said:
*“Let's look on the bright side for a minute. This doesn't require KYC for every transaction with a non-custodial wallet. It isn't an outright ban on self-custody. It doesn't prohibit the act of using a permissionless network. It really -- REALLY -- could have been much worse.”*
Scott Melker, a cryptocurrency trader, pinpointed the Relative Strength Index (RSI) of Bitcoin on the 4-hour chart to suggest that overbought bear divergences are likely to occur. He said:
*“Closed my $BTC leveraged long. Overbought bear divs are likely, not guaranteed. But I would love to long a retrace if given the chance. Especially a retest of the old all times high as support.”*

Bitcoin’s price has hung around $22,400-$22,800 after Thursday’s momentous spot volume day while brand-name DeFi protocols have the lion’s share of the market for locked crypto.
Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $22,783 as of 21:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Gaining 0.68% over the previous 24 hours.
Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $22,357-$23,261 (CoinDesk 20)
BTC above its 10-hour and 50-hour moving average on the hourly chart, a bullish signal for market technicians.
Thursday was the highest-volume day in 2020 for the eight exchanges tracked by the CoinDesk 20, with over $4.7 billion in volume. That day Coinbase led the way with $1.6 billion in volume, significant given Friday’s volume tally for the eight exchanges as of press time was only $1.7 billion.
In the derivatives market, open interest and volume have surged on futures venue CME, well-known as an institutional tool for hedging out traditional commodities as well as bitcoin.
Just five protocols have $10 billion locked in DeFi
Five brand-name protocols – stablecoin Maker, wrapped bitcoin (WBTC), lenders Compound and Aave along with decentralized exchange Uniswap – make up $10.5 billion of decentralized finance’s (DeFi) $16 billion total locked, according to DeFi Pulse.

FTX launched a pre-IPO market for Airbnb ahead of its release. And it appears that the crypto exchange is about to do the same for Coinbase.
FTX is working on a contract to trade tokenized shares in Coinbase - before it debuts on the stock market.
But no confirmation when, or even if, it'll launch.
Based on FTX's previous contracts, you'd trade it for USDC.
But while public investors must wait until Coinbase hashes out the details with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, crypto exchange FTX has reportedly jumped the gun, and may soon let its customers in on a pre-listing futures contract market for shares in Coinbase, FTX’s CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried, reportedly told Coindesk.
Bankman-Fried is reportedly working with CM-Equity, the German capital markets firm FTX partnered with when it launched tokenized stock markets in October, to work out whether the market would be compliant. Decrypt has reached out to Bankman-Fried to confirm these claims but received no response by time of publication.
Coinbase raised $547.3 million in funding since it was founded in 2012, according to CrunchBase data. Crypto market analysis firm Messari valued the exchange at $28 billion. In July, Coinbase disclosed that it has 35 million customers.
FTX launched a similar pre-IPO market for Airbnb ahead of its launch on December 10. When Airbnb’s IPO launched, shares more than doubled in price.

FinCEN, a bureau of the US Treasury, has proposed requiring banks and money service businesses to record transactions to private cryptocurrency wallets.
FinCEN, part of the US Treasury Department, has issued proposed rules for unhosted cryptocurrency wallets.
These rules would require money service businesses to report certain crypto transactions to such wallets to FinCEN.
According to FinCEN, the rules are designed to combat illicit activity.
After weeks of speculation that the Treasury Department was working on regulations that would affect crypto wallets, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) today issued proposed rules that would "require banks and money service businesses ('MSBs') to submit reports, keep records, and verify the identity of customers" who make crypto transactions into unhosted (read: private) wallets.
The new rules, which have gone out for public comment until January 4, 2021, propose that "convertible virtual currency" and "legal tender digital assets" be classified as "monetary instruments" and are therefore subject to the requirements of the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).

🗞 On-Chain Data Suggests More Institutions Are Buying Bitcoin Over the Counter https://www.coindesk.com/institutions-over-the-counter-bitcoin-trades
Despite bitcoin trading near all-time highs, more institutions continue to buy bitcoin, and they’re using over-the-counter (OTC) trading firms to keep their purchases from impacting the overall market.
Unlike retail investors or smaller institutions that use crypto exchanges, large institutions usually trade bitcoin (BTC, +2.75%) through the OTC market, noted John Todaro, director of institutional research at cryptocurrency analysis firm TradeBlock. That way, their transactions won’t move prices the way they would had the investors used even the largest centralized exchanges.
Both MicroStrategy and British investment firm Ruffer have revealed that their purchases of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of bitcoin were facilitated by Coinbase.
Another metric, the fund flow ratio for all exchanges, has gone down since the market sell-off in March. This is the ratio of network transaction volume of exchanges compared to the entire cryptocurrency transferred on the network. A lower number means fewer transactions that are done on exchanges and are instead conducted outside exchanges such as over-the-counter.
The third metric, the total amount of bitcoin transferred on the blockchain, has continued growing. This, coupled with the decreased fund flow ratio, indicates that potential massive OTC deals from the likes of institutions are “ongoing,” Ki said.

Bitcoin hits a new high at $23,770 on higher-than normal volume; DeFi’s total value locked has also hit a record on the strength of ether.

BTC below its 10-hour moving average but well above the 50-hour on the hourly chart, a bullish-to-sideways signal for market technicians.
Volumes on Thursday were higher than on Wednesday, with the eight major exchanges tracked by the CoinDesk 20 seeing over $3.5 billion in volume so far as of press time versus $2.9 billion the day previous.
Indeed, bitcoin’s 30-day volatility has been picking up and will be something to watch over the balance of December.
Ethereum network locked value at all-time high
The amount of crypto “locked” in decentralized finance, or DeFi, is at $16 billion as of press time, increasing over 2,200% from the $690 million locked at the start of 2020.
*“While bitcoin has largely dominated the narrative, I believe investors should look to altcoins that have tremendous amounts of development in both the core technology and usership, yet are still a fair way off their all-time highs,” said Pelecanos. “I am expecting to see the price of these altcoins, such as ETH and XEM, rally hard when the BTC price inevitably slows down.”*

DApp transaction volume has topped $270 billion so far in 2020, with 95% of this figure belonging to Ethereum’s DeFi ecosystem, according to DappRadar. That’s an astonishing 1178% increase from last year’s total of $21 billion.
The blockchain data provider revealed the figures in its annual DApp Industry Report today, summarizing the highlights and failures of a record-breaking year for DApp-based economics.
The report noted that money has been flowing from BTC to ETH throughout the year, resulting in a rise in the price of ETH, from 0.018 BTC on Jan 1. 2020 to its current price of 0.028 BTC.
Describing 2020 as the “year that DApps tried to grow at all costs,” the report found that just 10 DeFi DApps accounted for 87% of Ethereum’s total transaction volume.
Those 10 DApps totaled over one million active users in November, with the top three — **DeFi Swap (Crypto.com), Uniswap, and Compound — dominating the total with 930,000 between them**.
The report noted that the limitations of Ethereum became apparent this year as the network “effectively hit a wall in regards to scalability” with average gas prices several times higher than last year.

Compound Labs released a white paper Thursday detailing its plans to create Compound Chain, an application-specific blockchain that can provide money market services across multiple networks.
*“We want to announce the designs for a blockchain that can scale Compound over the next century,”* Compound founder Robert Leshner told CoinDesk on a phone call. The decentralized finance (DeFi) firm isn’t committing to a timeline yet but it is at work on a testnet now.
The new white paper, a draft of which was shared with CoinDesk in advance, authored by Leshner and Compound Labs staffers Geoffrey Hayes, Jared Flatow and Max Wolff, cites three limitations of the current version of Compound on Ethereum: gas costs, inability to serve assets on other chains and the fact that all supported assets aggregate the risk of each supported asset.
CASH
While the Compound Chain will be governed by COMP – the token that spurred the yield farming craze over the summer – it also introduces a new cryptocurrency called CASH.
Compound Chain’s native CASH token will be used to pay for transactions on the network. CASH will be minted in much the same way as DAI, as a debt against locked collateral held on the Compound Chain.
A new interoperability play
As soon as an asset is uploaded to Compound Chain, it’s available for lending to others. It’s up to users if they want to borrow against their assets or not.
As on Compound, they will be able to borrow any supported asset but they will also be able to borrow assets, starting with CASH, that are unique to the Compound Chain.

Bitcoin fees are on the up.
This happens when there's a lot of activity on the Bitcoin blockchain.
They've been higher than this, too.
Bitcoin fees have almost doubled since Sunday, data from BitInfoCharts shows.
On Sunday, it cost an average of $2.7 to send a Bitcoin transaction across the network. But as of yesterday, the most recent date on record, it cost $5. That is an 85% increase in four days.
Nope! When you process a Bitcoin transaction, you still have to pay the troll under the bridge. Only with Bitcoin, it’s a kind of decentralized toll. To be specific, you must pay a network of decentralized miners, computers who will race to solve a very complicated math puzzle required to process your transaction.
But the miners will only expend so much energy to process your transaction, otherwise their operators won’t be able to keep up with the immense electricity bills that running a Bitcoin miner racks up.
Denis Vinokourov, head of research at digital assets prime broker Bequant, told Decrypt, "Higher network activity leads to higher fees, and network congestion. A steep increase in the number of daily transactions lead to higher average fees per transaction." Vinokourov said, "This is similar to what happened with ETH and DeFi, when the latter was booming because of ongoing ETH-related transactions, gas fees skyrocketed."

It’s been a rapid rise since March, when Bitcoin drastically fell to its lowest point of the year, touching as low as $4,000. The coin has continued to bounce back and has fought its way above the $10,000 price point, going on to make new recent highs—and hit values not seen since Bitcoin’s epic 2017 bull run. Yet this time, an entirely different set of circumstances are accelerating Bitcoin’s price to new highs.
The MicroStrategy Effect
From August to September of this year, business intelligence firm and international giant—MicroStrategy—invested $425 million in Bitcoin.
Following MicroStrategy’s investment, Square invested $50 million—1% of the company’s total assets—into Bitcoin on October 8, 2020.
Public support for Bitcoin investments
Bitcoin’s positive run in the second half of 2020 has seen some major names embrace the cryptocurrency.
JPMorgan is one of the biggest examples of this. In 2017, JPMorgan’s CEO, Jamie Dimon, labelled Bitcoin a “fraud.” This October, the investment bank said Bitcoin is solidly competing with gold, and that “the potential long-term upside for Bitcoin is considerable.”
Grayscale Investments and Bitcoin custody
Grayscale Investments, an asset management company, is at the forefront of providing custodial services for wealthy Bitcoiners.
In October, Decrypt reported on how Grayscale Investments had picked up over 40,000 Bitcoin—worth over $600 million at the time of writing—for its clients. Yet, Grayscale is not the only player in town.
A total of 85,000 Bitcoin, worth approximately $695 million, has been bought up by both Grayscale and CashApp, a mobile payments service owned by Square. During the same period—Q1 of 2020—a total of 163,800 Bitcoin had been mined, meaning that both companies collectively bought the equivalent of about half of the total Bitcoin mined in that quarter.
Bitcoin halving: Squeezing the supply
The Bitcoin halving likely had an impact on Bitcoin’s price. The Bitcoin halving happens every four years and cuts the number of coins miners receive for adding new blocks to the Bitcoin blockchain in half. So from May onward, only half as much Bitcoin was being created as in previous months.
*“With the Bitcoin halving in May, this stream of supply has halved, meaning that fewer Bitcoin are put up for sale by miners. This can contribute to a shortage of supply and therefore to a rising Bitcoin price,”* Elias Strehle, researcher at the Blockchain Research Lab, told Decrypt.
PayPal and cryptocurrency
PayPal, the international payments giant, announced this October that it would launch cryptocurrency buying and selling features on its platform. It then confirmed yesterday that all of its customers could now access Bitcoin—and plans to bring this feature to Venmo.
This launch included the ability to buy and sell four cryptocurrencies, namely: Bitcoin; Bitcoin Cash; Ethereum; and Litecoin.

Bitcoin surged to new record highs above $23,000 earlier on Thursday, before quickly falling back by over $1,500.
The cryptocurrency dropped from the all-time high of $23,770 to $22,185 in the roughly 30 minutes to 09:45 UTC – a 6.67% drop, according to the CoinDesk 20. Prices rose by more than $2,000 to reach new record highs above $23,700 in the first nine hours of the day (UTC).
At the press time price of $22,560, bitcoin (BTC, +11.23%) is still up 14.37% on a 24-hour basis.
The rally is still looking solid, despite the recent losses. The derivatives market is showing no signs of overheating and on-chain data shows strong holding sentiment.
Further, there are no signs of large investors looking to book profits, with prices easily rallying to record highs above $23,000. At press time, there are roughly 2,400,000 coins held on exchanges. That’s the lowest since August 2018, according to data source Glassnode, and suggests investors aren’t preparing for a sell off.
In a sign of strong holding sentiment, exchange balances have declined by over 15% this year, taking the sell-side liquidity off the market.
Traders, however, should keep an eye on spot market volumes, as liquidity may dry over the Christmas holidays. That could produce wild swings on either side.

There is a total of 1.526,053 ETH in the Ethereum 2.0 deposit. By Ethereum’s current price of $660, this equates to more than $1 billion worth of Ethereum.

Bitcoin’s price has broken the $20,000 barrier, doing so less than a month after recording a new all-time high of $19,850. Its price just rose up to $20,100 in a sudden surge.
It has been an eventful few months for Bitcoin. After embarking on a bull run starting this September—which saw the cryptocurrency’s price increase from about $10,000 to $19,000—Bitcoin crashed during the US Thanksgiving Day weekend, dropping to the $16,351 mark. On November 30, Bitcoin finally broke its all-time high.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin’s price is $20,000, according to data from Messari. That marks a 3% increase in the last 24 hours, as well as a 28% increase from $16,351, the lowest point of Bitcoin’s recent price correction.
There are multiple reasons for Bitcoin’s recent success, including mainstream investment from institutions like MicroStrategy. But, according to Changpeng Zhao, CEO of Binance, there is more to it than big-name investors.

All three companies are now individually worth over $450 million.
Toronto-based Hut 8 (HUT) mining gained nearly 9% since the trading started Wednesday. The company currently is worth $168 million.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) announced Wednesday it will launch a futures contract on ether, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market value, in February 2021.
Ether (ETH, +6.37%) futures will be listed on Feb. 8, more than three years after bitcoin (BTC, +6.57%) futures went live.
Each contract will have 50 units of ether and the derivative product will be open to trade between 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m CT from Sunday to Friday, according to the official announcement.
The new contracts will use the CME CF ether-dollar reference ate from CF Benchmarks, the FCA-approved crypto indices provider.

Bitcoin climbed over the weekend to the $19,200 territory. Looking at ether’s price as a percentage of spot BTC, it may be undervalued.
Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $19,196 as of 21:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Gaining 0.35% over the previous 24 hours.
Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $18,990-$19,323 (CoinDesk 20)
BTC near its 10-hour moving average but above the 50-hour on the hourly chart, a flat-to-bullish signal for market technicians.
*“Quite a strong move over the weekend,” noted Chris Thomas, head of digital assets for Swissquote Bank. “I wouldn’t expect a continuation of 3%-4% a day. We’ll likely test the highs again in the next few days and will be met with a lot more sell orders [from] short- to medium-term whales and institutional traders.”*
After a higher-than-expected amount of volume over the weekend, including over $865 million in spot exchange volume Sunday for the eight exchanges tracked by the CoinDesk 20, Monday’s tally is looking lower, at $569 million as of press time.
Since then, however, the BitMEX effect has waned. Bitcoin’s volatility has also flattened out of late, with the 30-day volatility as calculated by CoinDesk Research at 57%, close to where it started 2020 when it was at 53% Jan. 1.
Ether at 3% of bitcoin’s price
Ether’s price as a percentage of the spot value of bitcoin is hovering around 3% according to data aggregator Skew. This is after the native asset of the Ethereum network started the year at below 2% of the price per 1 BTC and going as high as 4% on Sept. 1 during the fervent period of popularity for decentralized finance, or DeFi, in 2020.

The total of nearly 140,000 Bitcoin has increased in value by 2,600% since the 2014 hack.
The Mt. Gox hack—arguably the greatest hack in crypto history—resulted in the closure of the exchange that was responsible for over 70% of the world’s Bitcoin transactions at its peak. As of this year, multiple lawsuits have attempted to track down the perpetrators, as well as retrieve stolen funds.
A total of nearly 140,000 Bitcoin is set to be returned to former Mt. Gox users. By today’s prices, that amount of Bitcoin is valued at approximately $2.6 billion.

Over a thousand startups lost their crypto licenses in Estonia this year.
The country's Ministry of Finance rang the warning bells after the crypto sector was linked to a "high risk" of money laundering.
Crypto scammers have allegedly thrived under a separate Estonian legal program as well.
More than 1,000 crypto startups headquartered in Estonia lost their legal licenses in 2020, the country’s Ministry of Finance said last week, as per a report on local news outlet Postimees.
*“The connection of many of these companies to Estonia is minimal and the clientele of some of the companies is from remote countries,”* he stated in the regard.
Crypto firms have historically suffered in the legal aspects of their business despite the industry’s growth. Most countries do not legally recognize cryptocurrencies and big-name banks are notorious for blocking accounts found to be related to crypto businesses, creating a hurdle for smooth operations.

Digital asset manager Grayscale Investments has passed another milestone, reaching $13 billion in assets under management on Dec. 14 for the first time.
Data tweeted by the firm showed that the largest holdings remain in bitcoin, with the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust having $10.82 billion in the top crypto asset. The firm's Ethereum Trust now has $1.72 billion in AUM.
Grayscale also has trusts for litecoin ($74.8 million), bitcoin cash ($58.6 million), ethereum classic ($74.3) and others with less significant holdings including XRP, Stellar lumens and zcash.
The Ethereum Trust recently added another 131,455 ether which was valued at $74 million on Dec. 10, according to an SEC filing.
Michael Sonnenshein, managing director at Grayscale Investments, told Bloomberg in a recent interview, “Over the course of 2020 we are seeing a new group of investors who are Ethereum first and in some cases Ethereum only. There’s a growing conviction around Ethereum as an asset class.”

Vaccine, stimulus decision fuels risk appetite
On a wider macro level, talk is firmly focused on the United States agreeing a coronavirus stimulus package this week.
A major test of the dollar’s strength, negotiations have “no guarantee” of being successful, one government aide told mainstream media, but the cost of the package under discussion is around $900 billion.
As Cointelegraph reported, this will contain benefits for various economic sectors, but will crucially not involve a second stimulus check for ordinary Americans.
For Bitcoin, however, any major boost to USD is always a concern — 2020 has been characterized by the inverse correlation between BTC and the U.S. dollar currency index (DXY).
BTC price rebounds to crucial resistance
Within Bitcoin, the weekend has continued what is a relatively recent phenomenon for price action — more happening on Saturday and Sunday than during the week.
After a lackluster five days’ trading, BTC/USD rallied after Friday, rising from near $18,000 to highs of $19,400.
*“However, traders should be aware that there is a possible likelihood of a ‘fakeout’ above this recent high, through which a bearish divergence starts to be applied and further rangebound continuation is likely.”*
Another $1,000 futures gap joins the party
Countering the hope of a $20,000 showdown meanwhile, the weekend has ironically unleashed another “gap” in Bitcoin futures markets, providing downward pressure.
Roughly $1,000 in size, the difference between the end of Friday and the start of Monday trading for CME Bitcoin futures markets gives a lower price target of $18,100.

Institutional interest boosts Bitcoin's image

"Wholecoiner" wallets hit record numbers
According to statistics from on-chain analytics resource Glassnode, the number of Bitcoin wallets containing a whole coin or more is at a new all-time high. As of Sunday, almost 827,000 wallets had a balance of 1 BTC or more.
The difficulty in accruing a whole unit of Bitcoin has become an increasingly hot topic on social media amid the corporate investment narrative. This has combined with data showing that despite recent price rises, coins continue to leave exchanges for cold storage.

In an interview with TheStreet, Jim Cramer says he purchased Bitcoin (BTC) Friday morning when the price dipped under $18,000. The Mad Money host added he was treating the crypto asset as any other investment in a diverse portfolio.
“I will buy — like I usually do — as something comes down," said Cramer.
*"I'll get bigger and bigger and bigger. I just think that you want to diversify into all sorts of asset classes. I have gold. I’m going to diversify into some Bitcoin — not a big position for me — but it's certainly important to be diversified, and Bitcoin is an asset and I want to have a balance of assets."*

Zhou Xiaochuan, the former governor of China’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China, said in a conference on Sunday that the upcoming digital yuan is not being issued to replace existing fiat currencies, local publication SCMP reported this morning.
Instead, the digital currency will function alongside the currently used digital payment systems offered by nations and private operators.
Much has been written in the past few months about China’s upcoming digital yuan, officially the Digital Currency Electronic Payment (DCEP), and its aspirations to ease into global payment systems and gradually become the backbone of payments in Asia after its launch in 2022.
Tests have been widely successful so far. Over $300 million were transacted as of last month and a test last week—a “tap” payments feature that mimicked cash payments—saw a record $3 million in transactions over the weekend.

Earlier this week, JPMorgan published a global markets strategy note that points out that money has flowed out of gold and into bitcoin since October, and predicts that this trend will continue over the medium to longer term.
The easy conclusion is that investors are finally understanding that bitcoin (BTC, -0.90%) is a superior future store of value to gold, and are rotating out of one and into the other.
I’m not convinced that’s what we’re seeing. I agree with the analysts, though, that inflows into bitcoin will continue to increase, but not because investors are changing their minds. There’s something else going on.
In and out
Growing confidence
The GBTC trust mentioned above is only available upon issuance to accredited investors, who can sell on the OTC market after a six-month lock-up. The listed price carries a premium to the underlying value, which represents the strength of retail demand for bitcoin exposure. In what is known in the market as the “premium trade,” accredited investors that sell into the market after the lock-up capture both any bitcoin appreciation and the premium, and often reinvest all or part of the proceeds into new trust shares. Without strong retail demand, the GBTC premium would dwindle.
The sands of time
This week, financial advisor firm deVere released the results of a survey of over 700 of its millennial clients, which showed that two thirds of them prefer bitcoin to gold as an investment. This means that any new savings entering the market may be almost 70% more likely to be put in bitcoin than into gold.
Old and new
So, we are likely to have significant new demand for bitcoin as a portfolio investment coming in from younger retail investors, at a time professional investors are also taking notice. It’s not just bitcoin fundamentals at work. Many professional investors will be interested in bitcoin investment precisely because of this potential growth narrative – other people wanting bitcoin is enough to make them want bitcoin.
Balancing Act
This week he went even further: Not content with the $475 million already invested in the asset, MicroStrategy issued $650 million of convertible bonds (which was initially going to be $400 million and then got raised to $550 million and then got raised to … you get the picture), the proceeds of which will go to buy more bitcoin.
Is he nuts? Or is this the corporate treasury management of the future?
In my opinion, possibly both. Bitcoin is a relatively volatile asset, and corporate treasury is not the place to take risks. Citi seems to agree, as it downgraded its recommendation on MicroStrategy stock to a “sell” this week. At time of writing (Friday afternoon), the share price has fallen almost 15% over the week.

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has rebounded strongly from sub-$17,600 to $18,400 in the past 24 hours. Now, two major technical indicators are signaling the likelihood for a larger relief rally.
The 4-hour price chart of Bitcoin is showing a bullish divergence just as it prints a TD9 buy signal. Both indicators typically light up when an asset sees a strong sell-off and the selling pressure gets exhausted.
The Bitcoin sell-off might be losing steam
The 4-hour bullish divergence and TD9 buy signal are conceptually similar in that they emerge after a steep correction.
Scott Melker, a cryptocurrency trader, said that the 4-hour price chart of Bitcoin showed a bullish divergence as the price recovered above $18,150. He said:
*“We all know that we have a beautiful confirmed oversold bullish divergence with RSI. RSI is currently pushing against descending resistance. If it pushes through, price should follow up. No intention of closing my long for now.”*

The IRS finalized its Form 1040 for the 2020 tax year.
A crucial question about transacting cryptocurrencies has been added to page one.
It’s a sign that the IRS is looking to take crypto taxes more seriously down the line.
Back in August, the IRS released a draft of Form 1040—its individual income tax return—for the tax year 2020, which moved a crucial question about cryptocurrency right to the top of the first page. And with the release of the 2020 Form 1040 on the IRS’s website, that change has been made official.
There was no announcement, but cached versions of the IRS’s Form 1040 landing page show that the site was directing visitors to the 2019 version of the form as recently as December 10.
Shehan Chandrasekara, a tax expert at the software company CoinTracker, told Decrypt that the new placement of the question “shows how seriously the IRS is looking into the crypto tax reporting issues going forward.”
Conveniently for long-term crypto holders, simply hanging onto your crypto doesn’t actually count as “receiv[ing], sell[ing], send[ing], exchang[ing], or otherwise acquir[ing” virtual currency, according to IRS guidelines.

There are more addresses than ever holding some measure of Bitcoin and Ethereum: the number of non-zero Bitcoin and Ethereum addresses just hit 32,925,521 and 50,476,989, respectively, according to data from the blockchain analytics site Glassnode.
Both numbers have risen steadily over the past year and are showing no signs of slowing down.
Non-zero Bitcoin addresses experienced their greatest degree of fluctuation back in 2018, in the wake of the bull run; as prices shot up, the number of addresses followed suit, before quickly dropping back down.
This makes a kind of intuitive sense—as crypto adoption becomes increasingly mainstream, more and more traders are getting on board with these two coins, which have the largest and second-largest market capitalizations in crypto.

Digital artist Beeple yesterday kicked off a massive multi-day digital art sale to unite physical art with blockchain-based magic money. The first auction, which commenced last night at 7pm ET on Gemini-backed crypto art marketplace Nifty Gateway, generated $582,000 in 5 minutes; cumulative sales from the auction have since surpassed $1.1 million.
For a five-minute window yesterday, Beeple, real name Mike Winkelmann, sold three "open editions," titled “Bull Run,” “Into The Ether,” and “Infected,” at a rate of $969 apiece. While Nifty Gateway propped the window ajar, people could rush in and buy as many NFTs as they pleased.

Bitcoin is struggling to make gains as an expected low-volume weekend could push price further down. Meanwhile, the increasing number of active Ethereum addresses this year is a testament to the network’s growth.
Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $18,019 as of 21:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Slipping 2% over the previous 24 hours.
Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $17,593-$18,404 (CoinDesk 20)
BTC slightly above its 10-hour moving average but below the 50-hour on the hourly chart, a sideways signal for market technicians.
Friday is shaping up to be a better day in terms of volume at over $1 billion total for the eight major exchanges tracked by the CoinDesk 20 as of press time. Thursday’s figure was $965 million. However, weekends almost always have lower volume, such as last weekend’s $578 million daily average, according to CoinDesk 20 data.

T>he company confirmed Friday that it had sold $650 million worth of convertible senior notes at a rate of 0.750% due in 2025. The interest rate is payable semi-annually on June 15 and December 15 beginning in 2021.
According to the press release:
*“MicroStrategy intends to invest the net proceeds from the sale of the notes in bitcoin in accordance with its Treasury Reserve Policy pending identification of working capital needs and other general corporate purposes.”*
The raise was finalized mere days after the company first announced plans to leverage bond proceeds to acquire more Bitcoin. As Cointelegraph previously reported, MicroStrategy was initially targeting a raise of $400 million. At $650 million, the firm can purchase over 36,300 BTC at current prices.

Exactly a year ago, Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s founder and CEO, announced the launch of Blue Sky, a nonprofit social network protocol that is supposed to decentralize Twitter. The mandate is simple: Dorsey asked a team of five to “either find an existing decentralized standard they can help move forward, or failing that, create one from scratch.”

Other than Dorsey recounting Blue Sky’s mission during the Oslo Freedom Forum, no one is talking. Blue Sky’s Twitter handle was last updated in April 2020 and its last tweet was in March when it reported that the team is “hoping to put together a decentralization ecosystem review and may reach out to people and projects in the space. Recommendations are welcome!”
A decentralized form of Twitter can’t happen soon enough. The social media platform of choice for President Trump, in July Twitter was the victim of a notorious hack wherein the accounts of notable billionaires and politicians such as Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Joe Biden were commandeered. Ironically, the scammers used the accounts to solicit Bitcoin. The scandal caused the Internet to question Twitter’s “God-Mode”security as well as Bitcoin’s legitimacy.

EOS DeFi Space is quite active !

**For the past 2 months I have been quite active in the EOS DeFi space. I first came because of the "no fees" policies being completely outraged by what happened on the ETH network.**
EOS has been oftened laughed at due to its centralization and its first goal to be an "Ethereum killer". Well, that did not work.
But as Westerners sometimes we are too Western centric and forget that actually EOS has a lot of support from Chinese developers and communities.

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. is jumping into the institutional bitcoin game with a $100 million investment in bitcoin and a $5 million equity stake in NYDIG.
The twin plays – both revealed in a Thursday press release – give MassMutual direct exposure to the cryptocurrency’s price swings and signal it’s betting that other big fish will follow suit. NYDIG is one of the fastest-growing institutional crypto shops with $2.3 billion under management. It provided MassMutual with the $100 million buy.
Without specifically explaining why it saw bitcoin as a reasonable investment, MassMutual told the Wall Street Journal it was seeking “measured yet meaningful” exposure to an increasingly digital world.

Visa and Mastercard have stopped processing payments to the adult website.
Pornhub, which began accepting Bitcoin in September, previously used crypto to weather the departure of PayPal.
In the wake of a New York Times investigation that uncovered alleged videos of rape and child abuse on Pornhub, credit card companies Mastercard and Visa announced today they will no longer process payments for the adult website.
But Bitcoin remains an option—albeit a little-advertised one—for Pornhub, which has previously leveraged crypto to manage the fallout with payments company PayPal.
It also allows webcam models and other entertainers who upload to the site to receive payouts in Tether or Tron. Alternatively, they can sign up for direct deposit through their bank or use Cosmo Payment. What they can’t do is use PayPal—it stopped accepting payments from the platform in November 2019.

He said the country could lose out to China in the long run.
The crypto industry is seeing a slow pace of regulations in the US despite its fast technological advancements.
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire sent a letter to senior staff of the US Treasury Department yesterday appealing for the quicker regulation of cryptocurrencies and blockchain protocols in the country, stating it could lose out if it didn’t act on the emerging technology.
USD Coin (USDC) was one of the cornerstones of the letter. As one of the only regulated stablecoins—or cryptocurrencies fully backed on a 1:1 basis with a fiat currency—the product is backed by over $3 billion and completed $250 billion in settlements in 2020 due to increased demand.
However, Allaire claimed that most industry participants were already focused on eliminating financial fraud, and such regulations could effectively hamper the market’s growth and the US would lose out to countries like China.
He wrote, *“With all due respect, I believe the proposal would inadequately address the actual risks that are at issue, would significantly harm industry and American competitiveness, would continue to yield economic and industry advantage to Chinese firms, and would have significant unintended consequences around the broader use-cases for this technology.”*

Germany’s Bankhaus von der Heydt, or BVDH, has launched a Euro stablecoin on the Stellar network.
The bank claims the token is the first of its kind to be issued by a banking institute.The EURB stablecoin, which went live today, was developed on the Stellar blockchain in partnership with tokenization and digital asset custody technology provider Bitbond.
The asset, which is fully regulated and backed one-for-one with Euros, will not be openly traded on exchanges due to tight regulatory and Know Your Customer requirements.
If a customer wants to acquire the stablecoin, a fiat currency transfer is held in an escrow account at the BVDH, which triggers the issuance of the EURB. The announcement states that developers of financial applications can immediately utilize the token to settle asset transfers on-chain. The underlying platform, built by Bitbond, gives full control of the stablecoin’s security to the bank, including mechanisms for burning and minting the token.

There are no federally regulated "crypto banks" yet, though several crypto firms have applied for charters.
The Acting Comptroller of the OCC has encouraged crypto companies to apply for national charters.
Paxos, a stablecoin provider and digital asset company, has applied for a US national trust bank charter with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
If successful, Paxos, which is already regulated as a trust company in New York, would be “the first custodian of digital assets to be regulated at both the state and federal levels,” Paxos General Counsel Dan Burstein wrote in a blog post today.
In its OCC filing, Paxos said it will initially “conduct only certain activities that are currently conducted by Paxos’s New York state-chartered trust company and supervised by the [New York Department of Financial Services].” However, it stated, “Other activities conducted by Paxos affiliates may be migrated to Paxos National Trust over time based on operational, financial and legal considerations.”
In an interview last month with Forbes, after BitPay and Anchorage’s applications were submitted, Brooks indicated that national trust bank charters would be one way for crypto businesses that are currently regulated at the state level to operate nationally without getting a money transmission license.

Latin American crypto exchange Bitso has raised a whopping $62 million funding round, the largest in the region for a digital asset firm.
Announced Wednesday, Mexico City-based Bitso’s Series B also heralded the first investment in crypto by renowned fintech VC firms QED Investors and Kaszek Ventures, which led the fundraise. Also involved in the round were existing shareholders Coinbase and Pantera Capital.
Nigel Morris, co-founder and managing partner of QED Investors, and Nicolas Szekasy, co-founder and managing partner at Kaszek Ventures, are joining the board of Bitso.
*“We have been talking to QED and Kaszek for a really long time and they have been interested in crypto but hadn’t pulled the trigger until now,” said Daniel Vogel, CEO and co-founder of Bitso. “I think the conviction from them is because we are really focused on making this technology accessible to the people of Latin America.”*
**The spectre of deflationary currencies has driven Bitso user numbers to over a million, and a crypto market share of 97% in Mexico and 77% in Argentina**, Vogel said.

Bitcoin is facing selling pressure on Tuesday as traditional markets suffer the jitters over fears of a “no-deal” Brexit.
The top cryptocurrency by market value is changing hands near $18,800 at press time, representing a more than 2% decline on the day, according to CoinDesk 20 data. The decline comes after multiple rejections near $19,400 in the past 48 hours.
Bitcoin (BTC, -1.84%)‘s rally has lost steam in the past few days, with large sell orders placed around the all-time high of $19,920 capping the upside. According to observers, people are looking to sell at current levels based on what happened during the 2017 bull market. Bitcoin peaked at $19,783 in December 2017 and fell as low as $6,000 by early February.
Bitcoin’s 14-day relative strength index recently charted a bearish divergence, or lower high, possibly warning of an impending price pullback. The MACD histogram, an indicator used to gauge trend strength and shifts, is producing deeper bars below the zero line, also indicating a downside move may be imminent.
A potential sell-off in the stock markets could be a driver for a notable price pullback in bitcoin. The cryptocurrency has rallied to record highs, but has yet to decouple from the stock markets. The ascent from $10,000 to $19,920 seen over the past three months happened amid the bullish price action in the equity markets.

On Dec. 7, the firm revealed plans to issue $400 million in convertible senior notes — a debt security that can be converted into the issuing company’s shares. The announcement stated:
*“Microstrategy intends to invest the net proceeds from the sale of the notes in Bitcoin.”*
At current prices, the $400 million would increase the company’s holdings by 20,833, which would bring the firm's total crypto stash to almost 62,000 BTC.

BBVA, the second-largest bank in Spain, with about $840 billion in assets, is poised to enter the cryptocurrency trading and custody space, according to two people familiar with the plans.
The Spanish bank will begin its crypto offering out of Switzerland, said a source. Switzerland has relatively comprehensive rules around digital assets, set out by the country’s Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).
One source with knowledge of the plans told CoinDesk that BBVA is “launching its Europe-wide crypto initiative from Switzerland.”

UK meets its Brexit Waterloo
It’s make or break for the United Kingdom and the Euopean Union agreeing a Brexit trade deal.

Bittrex Global has launched trading in tokenized stocks such as Apple, Tesla and Amazon on its digital asset exchange.
The platform said traders and investors will have direct access to listed companies – also including Google, Facebook, Netflix, Pfizer and others – without having to use an external broker or pay additional fees.
Launched in a collaboration with DigitalAssets.AG, the tokenized shares can be purchased in fractions using either U.S. dollars, tether (USDT, -0.01%) and bitcoin (BTC, +0.12%). The listings also open up access in countries without access to U.S. stock markets, Bittrex said.
Traditional clearing systems "are inefficient and complex and trading small volumes can be expensive and take days, all of which is totally unnecessary given the technological advances that have been made in the last decade,” said Bittrex CEO Tom Albright.
Tokenized stocks looks to be growing trend among cryptocurrency firms. In October, crypto derivatives exchange FTX announced it would allow users of the exchange to register to trade on over 12 equity and cryptocurrency pairs.

A working group created as a partnership between crypto prime broker Bequant and Global Digital Finance wants to create some best practices for decentralized finance (DeFi) in an effort to improve adoption while warding off burdensome regulations.
The companies announced last month they would form an industry group with law firm Hogan Lovells, aiming to bring industry participants together “with the goal of bringing credibility and integrity to DeFi projects around the globe,” according to a press release.
Denis Vinokourov, Bequant’s head of research and one of the working group’s chairs, told CoinDesk the group has its roots in how the broader crypto industry has grown over the years. Creating some best practices might help ensure that regulators don’t feel the need to impose overly strict rules on the space by cleaning up malicious actors or reducing the amount of buggy code.

Chrome Browser Extension Is Redirecting Crypto Users to a Fake Metamask Site
According to an alert published by Ciphertrace, since December 2, 2020, they have been noticing “an uptick of alerts and comments” about crypto funds stolen via a Chrome browser extension posing as the ethereum (ETH)-based wallet Metamask.
The fraudulent extension redirects victims to installmetamask.com, which is not an official site of Metamask. Per Whois information, the web domain was registered on November 29, 2020. Ciphertrace found out the first mention in Twitter of the fraudulent domain from a user who asked Metamask team about the site’s authenticity.
The firm has been in contact with the crypto wallet company about the situation. Also, Metamask issued the following warning through their official Twitter account:

Ether options volumes dropping
After a surge of ether options volume on derivatives venue Deribit at the end of November, market interest seems to have dissipated, according to Greg Magadini, chief executive officer for data aggregator Genesis Volatility. “Volumes are decreasing and implied volatility is dropping. There is no clear decisiveness at the moment,” Magadini told CoinDesk.

Fresh off of bitcoin’s record high in late November, leverage funds trading bitcoin futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange continue adding to their short positions as the leading cryptocurrency trades above $19,000.
Net short open interest (OI) for CME leveraged funds, or the total amount of outstanding contracts, hit record levels for the past two weeks, according to CME Commitment of Traders reports published every Friday.
The market’s total OI hit record highs of $1.3 billion at the end of last month.
Despite a slight decrease in short positions in early November, this demographic of traders has continued increasing its short positions since September. Over the same time period, bitcoin (BTC, +0.62%) has gained 60%.
Notably, OI for the other categories of CME traders is not nearly as bearish. For example, net OI for the catch-all category of “Other Reportable” traders, claiming 17% of total OI, is heavily long and near all-time highs.

MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor announced his company’s third bitcoin purchase on Twitter Friday evening, per SEC filings the same day.
Saylor purchased 2,574 bitcoins for $50.0 million in cash bringing the business intelligence company's treasury holdings to approximately 40,824 bitcoins.
MicroStrategy first bought $250 million in bitcoin (BTC, +0.54%) (BTC) on Aug. 11. followed by an additional $175 million worth of BTC one month later.
Saylor said the latest purchase is part of MicroStrategy's treasury reserve policy of eschewing inflation-prone cash for bitcoin. The 55 year-old executive heralds bitcoin as the "most rational" vessel for value storage anywhere in the world.

It includes new language that broadens the definition of “currency” to include digital currencies.
President Trump is threatening to veto it because it doesn’t repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
Congress is finishing up its negotiations surrounding the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the 2021 fiscal year before the bill is set to appear before both the House of Representatives and Senate.
The NDAA is a massive bill passed annually that includes budget authorizations for the Department of Defense. The final draft of this year’s bill includes the Improving Laundering Laws and Increasing Comprehensive Information Tracking of Criminal Activity in Shell Holdings Act (the, uh, ILLICIT CASH Act). The act focuses largely on bolstering the government’s efforts in the realm of AML and CFT, or Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism.

The price of bitcoin is trending up in a low-volume environment. Meanwhile, some rebalancing from bitcoin into ether has been occurring on exchanges since late November.

Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $18,809-$19,607
BTC above its 10-day and 50-day moving averages, a bullish signal for market technicians.
Thursday’s even tighter range than the previous 24 hours is a symptom of lower-than-average volume. According to exchange data from the CoinDesk 20, daily volume was at $990 million as of press time, lower than Wednesday’s $1.3 billion daily volume and the past month’s $1.5 billion average.
"**“I was explaining to my non-crypto colleagues today that the supply and demand imbalance is just incredible,”** said Chris Thomas, head of digital assets for Swissquote Bank. “We’re seeing some institutional buyers pick up large amounts fairly frequently, so the others will also be seeing that [and asking] where are they getting the coins from?”"
The dry powder is out there in the form of miner wallets. Their balances have increased over the course of 2020, with Lubian.com, F2Pool, BinancePool and Poolin collectively holding over 33,000 BTC, according to data aggregator Glassnode.
Bitcoin’s overall volatility has been creeping upward since October and traders will continue to keep an eye on that metric in this overall bull market.

S&P Dow Jones Indices, a major financial data firm, said Thursday it will launch a customizable cryptocurrency indexing service in partnership with crypto data provider Lukka in 2021.
The coming product is poised to become a hub for cryptocurrency pricing data at a time when more Wall Street investors than ever are searching. This year’s bull run is said to be driven by institutions angling for exposure to bitcoin (BTC, +0.78%).

Oracle network Chainlink is among the alliance’s founding members. The company’s global head of business development, Dan Kochis, said:

KuCoin was hacked on September 25, with most funds recovered by November 11.
During that time, the price of Bitcoin went from $10,739 to $16,284.
KuCoin's trading volume is down 21% from the previous year.
Leading exchange Binance has watched its trading volume skyrocket—it’s up 133% in the last month and over 400% from the previous year, according to data from Nomics. Coinbase Pro is also up—over 200% for the month and 92% for the year. Kraken has had smooth sailing as well with 163% and 54% jumps for the month and year, respectively.
KuCoin has done $3.97 billion in transaction volume in the past month, according to Nomics. While that’s good for a 78% improvement from last month, the Singapore exchange is still doing smaller volumes than it had been doing for parts of July through September. Its volumes are down 21% from the previous year.
It got hacked on September 25 to the tune of $281 million worth of tokens (mostly altcoins). And although it was able to recover over 80% of the tokens by November 11, the timing of the hack couldn’t have been much worse for the exchange from a consumer confidence standpoint.
In between those two dates, Bitcoin’s price went from $10,739 to $16,284, but KuCoin’s trading volume was stuck in Q1, perhaps due to user concerns about the security of their funds.
Indeed, the number of Bitcoin reserves in Kucoin wallets plummeted from 1,059 on September 24 to under 50 the following day, according to data from CryptoQuant. That number has slowly ticked up to 403 BTC.

Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $18,360-$19,357
BTC near its 10-day and 50-day moving averages, a sideways signal for market technicians.
*“Consolidation continues, judging by the signals from the RSI indicators and Bollinger Bands,”* noted Constantin Kogan, partner at crypto-focused investment firm Wave Financial.
*“Drops happened multiple times during the 2017 rally and we expect them to happen several times again this bull run as part of the natural market cycle,”* said Andrew Tu, a representative from quant trading firm Efficient Frontier.
Ether options traders see a 91% chance of ether over $400 for December 2020 expiration. However, into 2021 those price probabilities drop quite a bit, with traders seeing a 91% chance of ether only over $280 by March 2021 expiration, according to date from aggregator Skew.

Three members of Congress have proposed a bill to regulate stablecoins.
The STABLE Act would hold stablecoin issuers to some of the same standards as banks.
Some cryptocurrency advocates think it will stifle innovation and further marginalize underbanked communities.
Today, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib announced the Stablecoin Tethering and Bank Licensing Enforcement (STABLE) Act, which is co-sponsored by Representative Jesús “Chuy” García and Representative Stephen Lynch.
The proposed bill, which has almost no shot of becoming law, riled up cryptocurrency enthusiasts on Wednesday night.
That's because the bill, which takes direct aim at stablecoin companies such as Tether as well as the SC-curious Facebook, would require any company issuing a stablecoin to have a banking charter and be approved by the Federal Reserve and FDIC—no small feat for digital asset firms.

Today we’re commemorating the launch of Ethereum 2.0, which marks the beginning of Ethereum’s live transformation into a proof-of-stake blockchain. The new blockchain is said to be several times more efficient, scalable and secure than the current decentralized application network.
While Ethereum 2.0 will take years to build out fully, its first phase of development, phase 0, is now officially underway. With the activation of phase 0, there’s a new use case for Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency, ether. It’s called staking.

Active validators on Ethereum 2.0 are, on average, earning 0.00403 ETH/day, or $2.36/day at time of writing, for their participation on the network. This amount will likely decrease as the number of validators on the network rises.
Eth 2.0: Risk and reward
Staking is risky as well, complete with different trade-offs from DeFi. Not only can your initial deposit be slashed for failing to keep up with the network, but hidden software risks still exist.
Each Eth 2.0 validator has to choose its own specification to work with from five different teams that programmed Eth 2.0 in various languages. Those specifications could have exploitable flaws, regardless of how smoothly testing went throughout the second half of 2020. That’s one reason staking rewards are set so high by developers.

While the Eth2 roll-out was believed to be occurring in strictly regimented ‘phases,’ Lubin emphasized that the other aspects of Eth2’s roll-out are “proceeding in parallel” — meaning upgrades to the protocol may come much sooner than many onlookers are expecting:
*“It is very likely will get a tremendous amount of data availability in the form of shards, as well as move lots of the important functionality from Ethereum 1 to Ethereum 2.0, and essentially see Ethereum 2.0 absorb Ethereum 1 in the not too distant future.”*

Lubin also noted that ConsenSys has recently been working on “cutting edge” CBDC and payments projects in partnership with various central banks, including the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Bank of Thailand, and the Reserve Bank of Australia.

The price of bitcoin took a bit of a dip, though overall market sentiment remains bullish. Ether’s correlation to bitcoin is going up despite differences in value propositions.
Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $19,077 as of 21:15 UTC (4:15 p.m. ET). Slipping 2.1% over the previous 24 hours.
Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $18,171-$19,920
BTC above its 10-day and 50-day moving average, a bullish trending signal for market technicians.
The price of bitcoin was able to hit as high as $19,920, according to CoinDesk 20 data, before momentum stalled. Traders began hitting the sell button, taking the price to as low as $18,171 before it recovered. It was at $19,123.70 as of press time.
Katie Stockton, a technical analyst for Fairlead Strategies, sees $19,511 as a “resistance” level, a price point the world’s oldest cryptocurrency can break through in this time of highly bullish sentiment. “An eventual breakout appears likely from a momentum perspective,” she said, noting that $19,511 “is not a strong resistance level – $20,000 is a psychological hurdle, much like Dow 30,000.”
*“Expect additional short-term volatility, although intermediate- and long-term momentum are strongly positive,”* Fairlead’s Stockton said. Thus, when looking at bitcoin’s volatility versus popular traditional assets, the store of value thesis may not be as strong as many believe as volatility is trending up versus other investments.
Is bitcoin leading ether?
Over the past several days, ether has mirrored bitcoin’s price rise closely.
The fact the two cryptocurrencies are increasingly trading in tandem belies the fact that Ethereum’s 2.0 Beacon Chain launch clearly differentiates some of its use case aspects. While bitcoin’s “store of value” narrative continues to be a strong signal coming from industry analysts, the “programmable money” thesis of Ethereum doesn’t seem to be making the market asset perform based on its own fundamentals – yet.

A generalized blockchain for decentralizing computer-based applications – from iPhone games to government bonds – Eth 2.0 has been under construction since the genesis of the current proof-of-work (PoW) network in 2015.
*“The launch of the Beacon Chain is a huge accomplishment and lays the foundation for Ethereum’s more scalable, secure, and sustainable home,” Ethereum Foundation researcher Danny Ryan told CoinDesk in an email. “There is still much work to do, but today we celebrate.”*
Eth 2.0 has at least two more technical hurdles to hit its ever-moving timeline: Dynamically breaking the PoS Ethereum blockchain into multiple datasets called “shards” and adopting Rollups, a throughput solution for decentralized applications (dapps).

At a practically ancient 29 years of age, Brian Tubergen, founder of crypto ICO platform CoinList, made it on the list in his last year of eligibility.
He’s watched as those around him won in years past. His co-founder, Andy Bromberg, made the list in 2016 for starting a (since shuttered) political news analysis app, Sidewire. And two of Tubergen’s close friends won the award. Nader Al-Naji, was honored in 2019 for making Basis, a (now defunct) stablecoin company that raised $133 million in a token sale, and Alex Pack, cofounder of crypto VC fund Dragonfly Capital, won it last year.

U.S. crypto exchange Coinbase said Tuesday that it brokered Microstrategy’s $425 million bitcoin purchase earlier this year. Until now, it has not been clear who facilitated the deal.
Microstrategy’s first bitcoin (BTC) haul of $250 million bought in August was executed over five days, Coinbase revealed in a case study of the transactions.
The deals – done via the exchange’s brokerage unit called Coinbase Prime – leveraged human effort and trading algorithms that sliced Microstrategy’s order into 200,000 fills. Each fill averaged under 0.3 BTC in size, it said.
*“Using our advanced execution capabilities, leading crypto prime brokerage platform, and OTC desk, we were able to buy a significant amount of bitcoin on behalf of Microstrategy and did so without moving the market,”* Brett Tejpaul, head of institutional sales, custody and prime services at Coinbase, said in a blog post.

*“Institutional inflows may have been much of the driving force behind this rally, but it’s been retail investors that have helped bitcoin pick up steam in recent weeks,”* said Zac Prince, chief executive officer of crypto lender BlockFi. ”Balances on our retail accounts have grown over 25% in the last 30 days, compared to just under 10% for institutional,” he added.
Ether traders paying for bullish bets
The ether options put/call ratio on Deribit, the largest derivatives exchange in the crypto ecosystem, has been skewing heavily towards calls over the past month. The put/call ratio shows the number of puts, which are options bets to price downside, versus calls, which are options bets to price upside.
*“During the past month, when looking at the put/call ratio in terms of premium traded, we can see an abnormally high ratio of calls trading to puts,”* noted Greg Magadini, chief executive officer of Genesis Volatility.

The Eth2 network won't be fully functional until further upgrades are launched.
If 2020 feels like it’s gone on too long, then the lead-up to Ethereum 2.0 has been a lifetime. But on December 1, the long-awaited proof-of-stake chain launches in earnest.
Ethereum 2.0’s beacon chain goes live on Tuesday at noon UTC after ETH holders contributed enough ETH—over 867,000 ETH thus far, well over the required 524,288—to start the chain.
“You do not need to do anything with any ETH you’re already holding,” the Ethereum Foundation said in a service announcement.
That’s true for a number of reasons, the foremost being that, at least until further upgrades, Ethereum 2.0 doesn’t do much from a user standpoint. As the Foundation’s handy-dandy explainer puts it, “It won’t be like the Ethereum mainnet of today. It can’t handle accounts or smart contracts.”
Instead, so-called Phase 0 introduces proof of stake, in which ETH holders lock up their crypto for a chance to earn a portion of the block rewards.
The next step is creating shard chains, ideally in 2021, which theoretically allow the blockchain to handle many more transactions per second than proof-of-work Ethereum, which often struggles with congestion. In 2021 or 2022, Phase 1.5 should hit, at which point Eth1 and Eth2 converge and the new blockchain should become broadly usable.

Stablecoins could “threaten financial security” if widely adopted, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said in an article published Monday in magazine L’ENA hors les murs.
In the piece, **Lagarde makes a bullish case for a digital euro while throwing shade at potential rivals such as cryptocurrencies and stablecoins – digital assets the values of which are pegged to fiat currencies.**
Lagarde said the main risk of cryptocurrencies is a feature that crypto proponents consider a plus, namely that cryptos rely purely on technology and that there is no identifiable issuer or claim. As a result, Lagarde said, cryptocurrencies suffer from a lack of liquidity, stability and trust, and therefore “do not fulfil all the functions of money.”
*“Using stablecoins as a store of value could trigger a large shift of bank deposits to stablecoins, which may have an impact on banks’* operations and the transmission of monetary policy,” the ECB head added.
Lagarde also said that if a stablecoin issuer can’t guarantee a fixed value or is viewed as not being able to absorb losses, it could trigger a run.

Ethereum 2.0 genesis stakers have pushed the total number of Ethereum nodes past the number of Bitcoin nodes for the second time this year.
According to Ethernodes.org, 11,259 Ethereum nodes are currently active, giving it a roughly 1% lead over Bitcoin’s 11,136. Ethereum’s node count last surpassed Bitcoin’s in early September.
The number of Ethereum nodes has increased by more than 50% in the past two weeks or so, spiking from 8,086 on Nov. 15 — 11 days after the Eth2 deposit contract went live. Ethereum’s node count overtook Bitcoin’s on Nov. 30.
The Flippening Index estimates that Ethereum posted a two-year high of 67.68% for strength relative to Bitcoin in early September due to the third-quarter DeFi boom.
Eth2's beacon chain genesis kicks off in just a few hours from now. The launch of the deposit contract allowed ETH holders to designate their Ethereum for staking, with the 524,288 Ether required to initiate the launch of the beacon chain being surpassed just hours before its deadline on Nov. 24.
According to Beaconcha.in, 878,808 Ether have now been sent to the deposit contract. The beacon chain’s genesis will lay the groundwork for sharding and proof-of-stake.

Bitcoin suffered a price crash earlier on Thursday, having missed record highs by a narrow margin earlier this week.
The top cryptocurrency by market value fell from over $19,300 to $16,327 during the early European trading hours and was last seen trading near $17,200, representing a 10% drop on a 24-hour basis, according to CoinDesk 20 data.
Excess leverage
Nearly $2 billion-worth of derivative positions have been liquidated in the past 24 hours. Of that, more than $1.6 billion-worth has been closed in the past 12 hours, according to data source Bybit.
Technical pullback
Bitcoin’s rally from $10,000 to $19,400 seen over the past seven weeks looked overstretched on the technical charts.
The momentum was so strong that the cryptocurrency consistently traded above its 10-day moving average (MA) throughout the ascent, despite an overbought reading on the 14-day relative strength index (RSI).
Other factors amplified sell-off
According to trader and analyst Alex Kruger, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong’s tweet thread about the U.S. Treasury Department’s rumored plans to track owners of self-hosted cryptocurrency wallets weakened the bullish move, allowing a price pullback.
*“This [regulatory concerns], against a backdrop of euphoria and unsustainable high leverage among longs led to the largest 24-hour drop since March,”* Kruger told CoinDesk in a Telegram chat.

The Coinbase CEO took to Twitter Wednesday night to blast the U.S. Treasury Department’s rumored plans to attempt to track owners of self-hosted cryptocurrency wallets with an onerous set of data-collection requirements.
If the whispers are to be believed, outgoing Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is preparing to tamp down on one of the fundamental tenets of the cryptocurrency ethos: the ability of the individual to hold their crypto (unmolested) themselves.
If true, the regulation would represent a broadside against the U.S. cryptocurrency industry like few ever levied by the federal government. It would force corporations to know every counterparty to their users’ crypto transactions, keeping logs, tracking movements, and verifying identities even before a transfer could take place.

Analysts say a larger Bitcoin (BTC) price pullback or a consolidation period could occur. The two factors that could trigger more downside include increasing whale activity and short-term resistance.
Bitcoin whale watching
As Cointelegraph reported, Bitcoin crashed after it surpassed $19,400 across major exchanges. It dropped to below $16,400 before slightly recovering. But analysts foresee another possible drop incoming, especially if BTC does not rebound strongly in the near term.
Two key trends caused the recent Bitcoin correction. First, whales began to sell BTC at around $19,000, resulting in a downside volatility spike. Second, this relatively small price drop triggered a cascading wave of liquidations in an overleveraged futures market.
Ki Young Ju, the CEO of CryptoQuant, said that more corrections might come in the short term. The All Exchanges Inflow Mean indicator, for instance, is still hovering at a high level, suggesting that there is still a lot of selling pressure in the market. He said:
*“More $BTC corrections might come. All Exchanges Inflow Mean (144-block MA) remains still high. In my opinion, we’ll face some corrections/sideways this week and it will break $20k by December this year. I’ll stack some sats a few days after.”*

Potential amendments should also hamper "shadow schemes," he added.

The Russian government plans to lead the development of the local cryptocurrency market in a “civilized direction,” so that owners of such assets could protect their rights and interests, the country’s prime minister Mikhail Mishustin stated during a meeting held today.
*“We will make a number of changes to the Tax Code. Digital financial assets will be recognized as property, and their owners will be able to rely on legal protection in the event of any illegal actions as well as defend their property rights in court,”* said Mishustin.

How high can bitcoin’s price go? Analysts say the higher the price, the more investors will plow in. Meanwhile, increasing ether options volume on Deribit is likely making derivatives more expensive.
Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $18,987 as of 21:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Gaining 3.2% over the previous 24 hours.
Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $18,059-$19,392
BTC below its 10-day moving average but above 50-day, a sideways signal for market technicians.
At over $1.6 billion as of press time, momentum in the form of USD/BTC volumes on five combined major exchanges is set for another banner day. Tuesday is shaping up to be the second highest in the past month as billion-dollar volume days for the five exchanges are becoming more common.
Since starting the year uncorrelated with the S&P 500 – which is denoted as “0” in the chart below – bitcoin’s performance has more closely matched stocks after March’s crash when assets dropped amid COVID-19 concerns. The correlation coefficient of the two on a 90-day basis is now around 0.3.
ETH options heating up
With 198,247 total contracts traded, Monday was the second-biggest day in 2020 for Deribit ether options contracts, according to data aggregator Genesis Volatility. The top day was Sept. 1, when total contracts reached 201,815.

Crypto exchange Coinbase plans to end all margin trading effective Nov. 25, 2020, due to recent regulations by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
The San Francisco-based trading platform announced Tuesday that it would prevent customers from placing new margin trades beginning at 2 p.m. PT (22:00 UTC) on Wednesday, while simultaneously canceling any open limit orders.
Coinbase will end the margin trading feature entirely next month, once existing positions expire. When customers trade on margin, they’re effectively borrowing funds from the exchange or broker to cover the cost of an investment in an asset such as a security or a cryptocurrency. This allows traders to leverage their positions, thus amplifying profits – or losses.
‘Actual delivery’
Coinbase appears to be saying that it is difficult, if not impossible, for it to comply with a CFTC requirement that neither it nor any affiliated entity can have any sort of control over a cryptocurrency once it’s been delivered in accordance with the terms of a margin contract.

XRP has chalked up an impressive rally to two-year highs in the last few days, and a coming airdrop may be driving the gains.
Trading around $0.70 at the time of writing, the world’s third-largest cryptocurrency by market value is up 130% from lows near $0.30 seen on Saturday. Prices reached a high of $0.79 earlier on Tuesday, the highest level since May 10, 2018, according to the CoinDesk 20.
The free distribution of 45 billion spark tokens, based on a snapshot of XRP addresses on Dec. 12, is supported by Ripple’s investment arm RippleX (formerly Xpring).
*“The impending airdrop is supercharging the XRP bull market and whipping mindshare of one of the largest crypto communities into a frenzy,” according to Jehan Chu, a managing partner at Hong Kong-based blockchain investment firm Kenetic Capital. “With the imminent launch of Flare, a smart contract utility fork of XRP, the pair will attempt to challenge Ethereum’s dominance in decentralized finance and decentralized applications.”*
Nearly 2.3 billion XRP, worth nearly $1 billion, have been transferred to cryptocurrency exchanges since Saturday. That’s more than three times the average daily inflow seen in 2019, according to blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis.

Coinbase is abandoning a tax form that provided insufficient information required to pay crypto taxes for another form, which also misses out crucial information.
Coinbase is scrapping an old tax form.
Its new form will go to anyone who made at least $600 from certain Coinbase products.
The old form was plagued with issues, but the new one is far from free of them, a crypto tax expert told Decrypt.
As spotted by Shehan Chandrasekera, head of tax strategy at crypto tax firm CoinTracker, Coinbase updated a help page to inform customers that it is abandoning its old tax form that provided customers with total proceeds of trades executed on the platform in favor of one that only includes information about money earned from Coinbase’s interest-bearing products.
