While it’s found statewide in roadsides, meadows, and woods, there’s nothing common about common fireweed. This hardy flower is one of the first plants to appear after a fire or other ground disturbance, its hot pink/magenta petals sprouting from a (usually) single stalk. And it’s one of my favorite wildflowers to see when I visit Alaska.
