Going Back to My First Love People always say first love never dies, and I guess this is somehow true in this context. Nah, uh-uh, before you assume things—I ain’t talking about a person. My first love in human form is my childhood best friend, but now we’re doing fine as acquaintances. He actually seems like a brother to me now, considering as well that I served as an assistant to his mother in a given institution. I also have my own partner now. Thus, for this part, I’m talking about my passion, which despite failing a lot of times in this department, I still get back to, and that is writing. Hello everyone, it’s good to be back here years later. My name is Thain, and as part of my warming up, I’ll tell you why writing is my first love. 1. Writing calms my mind and my heart
You know that feeling when you’re too anxious? Sometimes people bite their nails or shake their legs; it’s actually a way to make them feel at ease. For some people, they have comfort food—they eat and eat until they feel relaxed. For me, however, my kind of therapy is writing my thoughts out. I love writing because it helps me be at ease—the sound of the keyboard being hit every time I make a word. The words I can read and the finished product I can make. People say that I really have a gift for writing. Ever since I was a kid, I have already been writing—not just prose and poetry, but anything I could write. The most early memory I have is writing a Filipino paragraph on what we did during Undas, or All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day. Well, in the Philippines, it is natural for school to take a break for several days in early November and late October. This timing is parallel with Halloween Day in the West. I remember being praised for being the only one who knew how to make a paragraph, which is understandable since we were really in early grade school back then. So it is really suitable to say that writing itself has become therapy for me. 2. I want to document my memory
I am part of that silent coalition of daydreamers, and yes, I have a healthy imagination. People in normal circumstances have a lot of things going on in their minds every day. And some thoughts of mine—I consider them very important, especially when they are a piece of information that I’m trying to build somewhere. I, too, tend to forget things after a while, so I make sure that I jot down every thought I have that I consider important. Thus, I would also bring a pen and paper and anything that I could use to jot down info. Aside from this, since I am not wealthy, I value my gift—books or written info, especially those published online, tend to last for quite a long amount of time. For instance, what I write here can stay for a long time, as long as this app operates; this might always be present and available for all viewers. I thought that when I write for someone and publish it online, it can serve as my legacy or one that my loved ones can remember me by, especially during those times I thought I might not live for some reasons. So for those who want to leave a good message, writing is a recommendation. Words are powerful, especially those that are brought up with good intentions and with good substance—who knows, you might help someone. 3. I want to practice
Humans should evolve and learn as they grow. For a skill to be useful and for the gift to manifest in full potential, practicing is a necessary action. As much as I give credit to my early education that pushed me forward to learn writing early, I also knew that without practice, I could only write at a limited pace with limited ways of expression. Thus, I also take into account practicing in order for me to get better at my craft. I went back to writing because I also want to practice. Taking a rest for a long time has allowed me to realize that my growth became stagnant, thus one way to at least keep it going is to write continuously on several topics that would allow me to express, but also research should the topic be sensitive. I also hope you guys value writing as well as much as I do. I am excited to write several articles again here in a consistent manner. Stay safe, everyone.
