In Russia, the number of crimes related to cryptocurrencies is growing. Several citizens were sentenced in Moscow this week to different prison terms for extorting bitcoins. The press service of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported that Georgy Lyamin, Pavel Batechko, Alexey Khamilonov and Karlen Meliksetyan kidnapped an entrepreneur to take away 275 BTC from him. The crime was committed in 2018. The attackers rented an apartment and decided to keep the kidnapped businessman in it. However, he learned about their plans and asked for help from law enforcement agencies. The police began to follow the businessman and specifically allowed his abduction to take suspects at the scene of the crime. As a result, all of them were detained. Ammunition and firearms were found in their possession. The court found all these Russians guilty and sentenced them to prison. Lyamin received ten years, Khamilonov-8.6 years, Batechko-8 years, and Meliksetyan-5 years in a high-security penal colony. Another member of the Goryunov group made a deal with the investigation.
