Numerous books and articles have been written on Bengali and Bengali in the nineteenth century. In that context, we see a void situation regarding his predecessor, the eighteenth century. There is, of course, an argument behind giving special status to the nineteenth century in the realm of history. The nineteenth century was an eventful century, the result of which was the renaissance in Bengal. That means the nineteenth century was an era of transformation. Since then, the eighteenth century has been no less eventful. Moreover, although the eighteenth century was a period of decline, the renaissance preparations took place towards the end of the eighteenth century. In fact, the eighteenth century has been marked in the history of Bengal as a turning point. In this century we have seen a tremendous change in the state, social, economic and religious spheres. In the case of the state, the decline of the central Mughal power in Delhi took place at the beginning of this century. It was in the wake of this decline that the Nawabi period began in Bengal, the history of which was tarnished by the Battle of Palashi. It was this battle of Palashi that sowed the seeds of British imperialism in Bengal. British imperialism completely upset the public life of Bengal.
