Nikola Subašić (1993) saved the life of his friend Luka Vasiljević (1994) by giving him a kidney and more than half of his liver, which he needed for a transplant. Due to a congenital lack of the enzyme Alpha 1 antitrypsin, Luka got cirrhosis of the liver, and his kidneys also failed, so at the age of only 23, his life was reduced to dialysis. The only hope for Luka was a kidney and liver transplant, and the situation was so much worse that the parents could not be donors due to a mismatch of blood groups. Many relatives and friends withdrew and fell silent, and then Nikola Subašić called and did one of the greatest feats that could be heard in recent years. Nikola was born in war-torn Glamoč, and the child is from a refugee family. He moved to Belgrade with his brother, where they live as tenants in Vasiljevic's house. He lost his father, and his mother, sister and two other brothers live in Banja Luka. He quickly became friends with Luka because he worked in the Zemun hospital, where Luka went on dialysis. As he says, he could not watch his friend suffer, and he announced his decision to Luka's mother, who was illuminated by happiness. Brave Nikola did not back down even when the doctor jokingly asked him if he was sure of his decision, because one in ten dies. "My mother taught me to accept responsibility for my decisions, whether they were good or bad. This was a good decision, I knew it, and nothing could distract me from it," says Nikola.
