Scientists use a 3D printer to replicate the brain cell of a mouse An international team of scientists from Canada and Brazil have successfully used a new laser technique to 3D print a living, functioning mouse brain cell. According to a paper published in the journal Micromachines, most of the mouse’s neurons survived for two days after they were printed, making them viable for preclinical research. “In general, people often leap to conclusions when we talk about bioprinting,” Concordia University graduate student and study co-author Hamid Orimi said in a press release. “They think that we can now print things like human organs for transplants. While this is a long-term objective, we are very far from that point. But there are still many ways to use this technology.” Hamid Orimi sees the immediate goal of this research as replacing animal testing for new pharmaceutical products by eventually printing and experimenting on human neurons instead. #Science
